Hey Just Sold: Would these be more Steelcrafts? Appears to be at the Weirs Boat-O-Rama circa early 1960s. "...a land of great contrast and variety.....shown here is a view of BEAUTIFUL Paugus Bay."

They certainly look like Steelcraft boats. The swooping side (gunwale)and below deck cabin window placement on the 2 here match what I saw in Gilford last week. Even the angle of the bow is similar to what I have seen. As a kid I remember seeing a few of these around the lake.

Thanks for the post. I do like the old boats.

Those two at the end of the pier are definitely Steelecraft. One of my neighbors at Loon Cove had one in the late fiftys, and the Marine Patrol had one with a davit on the stern for retreiving sunken boats, motors etc. There are still some around, I saw one in Smith Cove near Fays this past weekend.

Back in the 1950's the Marine Patrol had two Steelcrafts on Patrol. They were painted white with a Blue Deck and Roof over the cockpit. I think these were the only "patrol boats" as we called them on the Lake. They were operated by the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission and later the Department of Public Safety. The boats were kept in two boathouses that were located in the Weirs Channel to the right of Channel Marine. I can remember getting pulled over by them for not having a license plate. Back then a motorized boat was issued a steel license plate instead of the bow number with decal.

You could actually buy your boat license plate from the patrol boat back then and they gave away free maps of the lake.

Jeff Fay of Fays Boat Yard has a Steelcraft and he knows a lot about the history of Steelcrafts. I think the Steelcrafts originally came with a six cylinder Packard motors.
