The Chateaugay was designed in 1888 as a passenger excursion boat. At her time she was considered state of the art. Captain Eli Rockwell was almost 100 years old when he was still the captain of the Chateaugay. He was the oldest steamboat captain in the world. The Chateaugay broke up on the rocks of Lake Champlain in 1893. There is great question as to what happened on that night. Captain Rockwell was not at the wheel. She was rebuilt and put back into use on the lake. Later to become our new Mount Washington.
This photo is taken after the conversion was made to an auto ferry.
