This guy was hanging around at the launch. It let me get close enough to shoot it with a 50m lens before it spooked.

These birds are so cool. A few summers ago while I was putting in my kayak, our Great Blue Heron startled me by landing on the dock right behind me! He was only a couple feet away. He hung around for almost an hour, fishing off the PWC and dock. It was neat to see it drop into the lake like a stone and come back out as if on an escalator. It hasn't been by for a long time now. I don't think The Broads are a normal habitat for GBH.

It reminds me of a pterodactyl when in flight. I agree about the habitat. they like the shallow weedy spots home to all the critters they find tasty. But now and then you can find 'em any place. I've had them visit my vernal pond and it's only about 20' x 10' about 6"deep and loaded with salamanders, bullfrogs, green frogs, pickerel frogs, wood frogs and spring peepers. I call it "My Mosquito Farm."
