Smith's River drains Smith Pond...now called Lake Wentworth, into Back Bay in Wolfeboro. This postcard actually more accurately depicts the back bay in Wolfeboro. It was home to several saw mills which floated logs down the river from Lake Wentworth. Wolfeboro was famous for making a product called excelsior which was made of wood scraps and sawdust and used as packing material. Some say that the problem with milfoil in back bay is exacerbated by layers of sawdust on much of the floor of the bay. Who knew?
