mcdude Senior Member Registered: July 2002 Location: Rock Haven Lake - West Newfield, ME Posts: 5,367	Smith's River drains Smith Pond...now called Lake Wentworth, into Back Bay in Wolfeboro. This postcard actually more accurately depicts the back bay in Wolfeboro. It was home to several saw mills which floated logs down the river from Lake Wentworth. Wolfeboro was famous for making a product called excelsior which was made of wood scraps and sawdust and used as packing material. Some say that the problem with milfoil in back bay is exacerbated by layers of sawdust on much of the floor of the bay. Who knew?

Not far away is a riverfront site called Mast Landing where I, as a kid, once worked a gas pump.

It was the site where British loggers pulled great, tall White Pine trees from the Smith River for use on His Majesty's Tall-Ship Navy. Other tall White Pines were accurately felled to make a "bed" upon which the the selected Pine was to fall without damage.

His Majesty's engineers marked trees 24" or greater selected for masts—in place—with The Crown's "Broad Arrow" logo.
