Manning Lake, 200 acres big and a relatively shallow lake, is found in Gilmanton. It is one of the few lakes of the area that has escaped the development frenzy that has impacted most of the lakes of our region and reminds one of the ambiance of our lakes and ponds in the mid-20th century, when life was slower and more quiet. And development is not apt to change that ambiance, since more than half the shoreline is protected from development by a conservation easement, on land owned by the Boy Scouts. Being shallow, it is managed by Fish and Game as a warm-water fishery - they encourage fishing on the lake for species like brook trout, bass and horned pout. A public boat launching site is maintained (upgraded this fall, in fact) where quite a few fishermen put in their small boats to try their luck. It is also touted as an excellent spot for canoists and kayakers to enjoy their sport as there is very limited boat traffic (except for a 6-week period in summer when the scout camp is active) to harry them. Photo taken yesterday - in the lower left corner you can see some ice formed already on a portion of the very small Lake Eileen, on the scout land.
