dcr Deceased Member Registered: February 2004 Posts: 1,317	A view from a large ledge half-way up the westerly slope of Halls Mt in Brookfield, near the Kings Highway. A shot through a gap in the trees to the mostly dry lake-bed of Jones Pond. This is in the Ellis Hatch Wildlife Management Area and Fish & Game stocks what's left of this once 20-acre pond with brook trout, which more than a few anglers make a try for. Most of the pond bottom is high and dry, as the earthen dam failed some years ago and now only modest amounts of water are held back.

Hi DCR, your knowledge of the area is astounding. Can you explain the apparent confusion over the name of Jones Pond? I had always heard that the area of the Merrymeeting River, along Merrymeeting Road, between the dam just outside ND center and the small bridge that the road crosses, is known as Jones Pond.

The town has been discussing the managment of milfoil in "Jones Pond" for some time. http://www.fosters.com/apps/pbcs.dll...ochesterRegion

Merrymeeting: Thanks for alerting me to a mistaken assumption I made about the location of the Jones Pond found on the Hatch Wildlife Management area, a 1500 A. area in the Moose Mountains. The main entrance to the area is from the Kings Highway in New Durham - a gated road leads to the pond in about 3/4 of a mile. One parks at the gate, about 50 yds in from Kings Highway, and walks the rest of the way in.(I'm guessing that you pass that small entrance road on your way to your camp.) I assumed that since I started in New Durham and walked less than a mile in, that I was still in New Durham - if I had checked my map I would have seen that the New Durham town line lies nearly 200 yds short of Jones Pond. So there are not 2 Jones Ponds in New Durham, just the one you pointed out near New Durham village - the Jones Pond I was referring to is just across the New Durham/Brookfield line. I have enough respect for your pervasive knowledge of the geography of the area, I was prepared to start an education campaign in New Durham to alrert everyone they had the wrong Jones Pond! :-)

Thanks for the clarifications. I do know the entrance you are referencing, and yes, we pass it all the time. I'll have to hike in one of these days.
