The Bear Island House was a hotel built near the center of the island in 1852. Guests came by train to the Weirs, took the Old Mount Washinton to the Mail Dock and then horse and surrey to the Hotel.
It burned in 1934 but a cellar hole and a few bricks remain. The book "Bear Island Reflections" has a chapter on the hotel.
