I had the same, early 60's, boat but a little shorter from what I see in your photo. It came from a display my Dad had in the drug store. There was a spot for the sail to attach when it was a display piece. I had the same result as you too but while trying to get the water line in using this boat early in May one year. The single weight for the water line unbalanced the boat just enough and overboard I went in shallow water. I made the fastest run into the cottage you ever saw and stood over the single heating register shivering like crazy. Never used the boat again either.
