A scene from the top of Turtleback Mt in the Ossipees, looking east to the double-summit of Big Ball Mt, in the center mid-ground. The open ledges you see in the foreground are basaltic rock, made a few hundred million years ago when a large volcano created the Ossipee Range. The fellow at the left is an occasional hiking companion of mine who happens to be a geologist, and he is hammering at the rock to chip pieces off that he can study to determine its mineral composition. A couple of years ago a book of his about the geology of the Belknap Range was published, titled 'Stepping Stones Across New Hampshire'. I don't think, however, that he's planning a book about the Ossipees; he's just indulging his passion to know more about the way the mountains were built up (and then torn down) over aeons of geologic time.
