Wild turkeys in NH typically have their mating season in April, so we can soon expect to perhaps see this kind of display by the toms, or males. These 2 males were seen a few years ago at Castle in the Clouds. The bird at the right is a mature male, showing some of the postures and strutting that make up the mating ritual. The bird at the left seems to be an immature male - certainly smaller in size and lacking fully developed wattles (the red appendage below the base of the beak), and not yet sporting some of the coloring specific to the males during mating season. This immature bird will probably only watch the mature one, picking up tips on what to do, rather than try to compete with him. In May turkey hunting season begins in NH.
