This 9-10 ft high boulder may be a glacial erratic, a large boulder moved many miles from its place of origen by glaciers thousands of years ago, or it may be a fallen piece of a high cliff that is situated less than 50 yds from the site. About 45 yrs ago, when I first started wandering through these woods, this boulder was sometimes used as a camping site; hikers would place a small wood fire about 6 ft away from the boulder and then place their bed roll right next to it. Then they were heated during the cool of the night on 1 side by the fire and on the other side by the reflected heat off the boulder. Fortunately, since the practice could result in a forest fire, in recent decades there has been no sign of anyone doing that, but you can still see the black smoke markings on the overhanging portion of the boulder where smoke rising from the fire steadily drifted against the boulder.
