Photo shows a beaver pond on the SW flank of Piper Mt. The pond has been abandoned by the beavers for quite a few years, but the good shape of their old lodge shows how good the engineering skills of the beavers must be. Note that one of the several entrance holes to the lodge is visible, right at the level of the pond - when the dam was still intact and the pond was full, that hole would have been several ft under water. The dam was unusually tall and thick and must have held back an unusually large volume of water. After the beavers left and repairs were no longer routinely made to the dam, it grew constantly weaker, until during a large flood (like we've seen the last 2 springs), the dam was ruptured where it covered the stream bed and that part of the dam was washed downstream. The southern peak of Piper Mt shows in the background.
