Default Bizer or Duncan charts?

I see a lot of references to people using Bizer charts but have not seen anyone mention Duncan charts. Does anyone have experience with both and can share their opinion on which one is better?

Some years ago--I am an old man and cannot remember the date-- there was a tiff that led to a public cartography showdown which was to be held on neutral territory. On the day of battle, people lined the streets to see who would claim victory and, hence, become the Monarch of Maps. It is widely told that Duncan never showed, but having been a wee lad selling wares off a cart, I was privy to the truth: Bizer, ever the gentleman, arrived armed with the agreed upon weapons--a protractor, compass, and marker's pencil--but Duncan, ever the shifty vagrant, had hidden nunchucks in his cloak. When this was discovered, the townspeople erupted in outrage and briskly ushered Duncan out of town, never to be seen again.

As a result of this skirmish--some refer to it as the Great Betrayal of Centre Harbour--Bizer was granted lone sovereignty over Winni maps. Since then, he has enjoyed his reign peacefully.

Nobody really knows what ever happened to Duncan. I heard not long ago that he had become a server in a 1920's-themed speakeasy known for its incredible crawfish and bathtub gin, but that was never confirmed.

I usually like to have both charts, as each has their own charms.

I tend to 100.1% use the Bizer, and trust it for navigating (but always follow the markers on the lake as the last word). On a recent update to the Duncan chart, several people pointed out some errors in it, perhaps they have been fixed by now.

But my one complaint, Bizer seems to refuse to properly name my favorite rock! I guess they are trying to stay slightly PC, but I'm not sure why, it's well known on other charts by name, except on the Bizer where it is only known as FL "46".

Tell people that you are at FL 46 and they will most probably have to pull a chart to understand where you are located.

Tell them that you are at Nipple Rock and they will know exactly where you are without having to consult a chart.

Until you mentioned it -- I never noticed and would have argued with you.

Seems Bizer dropped labeling it as "nipple rock" for in an older Lake chart that we have hanging in our condo it is there in print -- yet as I look at a later edition I see it has been removed.

Not at the condo until the weekend, so can't tell you which edition is hanging, but it isn't THAT old (perhaps 3-4 years out of date)

As late as 2003, Bizer could find nothing in print, other than Duncan's map, where this rock had any name at all. Bizer assumes the off-color name that Granny perpetuates was derived from the fact that vandals occasionally paint Rock 46 to look like a female body part.

By the way.. I'm starting some lake folklore....

Did you know? Everyone that show's their bare nipples to Nipple Rock receives a year of good luck and possible fortune!

Don't worry, "What happens on the boat, stays on the boat!"

Spread the word!

From Bizer's FAQ page:

Quote:
Bizer only reports names taken from a generally accepted public record, and then only if the name has some navigational significance to it.
Whether that rock's name has any navigational significance is debatable. However, as I said in my 2011 post, as quoted by Rich, I have never seen it referred to as Nipple Rock other than Duncan's chart. Does anyone have a cite for public use? Bizer never copied anything from any copyrighted document. For example, Kinneho Island lies just north of Welch Island. Duncan has always called it Kineo Island. Maybe it was an intentional error on Duncan's part to see if someone would copy their map.

Also, Bizer doesn't want to put anything controversial on the map. Of all the complaints received about Bizer's omission, 100% have come from men. Ladies, how do you feel on the subject?

I also want to note: That 2011 post showed Duncan that their position of that rock was in error by 600 feet. That's over 1/10th mile. They corrected their map in later editions based on Bizer's post.

I always love and refer to your maps as well as suggest to friends and new boaters that they purchase one!

But I'd like to see "the" rock named, and it would be fun if you included my bit of folklore that I'm trying to start! Don't worry, I haven't copyrighted this, so you can be the first!

Original post.

Bizer or Duncan charts?

Depends on what you want to do with it.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/1268476...shade-map-lamp

Just stumbled across this, while trying to find some decent images of some of the older late 70's to mid 80's navigation maps of the lake that had (for lack of a better term) a brief overview of some of the basic boating laws off to the side of the main map detail.

Then stumbled across the lampshade anyone ever seen this before. Could not find anything doing a search for "lampshade" "lamp" and "botanicallampshades".

Default Lampshade

I have a similar lampshade at home. It has to be at least 20 years old. Nipple Rock has been known by that name for at least the 44 years I've been on the lake.

Thanks for the pictures, had never seen them before. Really want to get one or two for my little fishing / tv room.
