Default Sandwich NH Area Military Activity/Army Corps Markers

Posting out of curiosity:

I have always seen lots of low flying planes around the sandwich area...today, we we're exploring and found these Army Corps Markers from 1984. There are some interesting satellite images of the area on Google Earth as well (clearings, darkened areas, etc). Does anyone know what goes on up there? Name: 1497238034038.jpg

Default Low Flying Planes

Hi Meredith,
There is a Military Operations Area (Yankee 1&2 MOA) that extends roughly from Meredith at the south to Mount Washington to the east to Berlin to the north, and Topsham, VT to the west. Yankee 1 includes airspace from 9,000-18,000 ft. above mean sea level. Yankee 2 MOA, a smaller area centered over the Sandwich Mts. includes airspace 100' above ground level up to 9,000 ft. above sea level. When Yankee 2 MOA is active there can be low-flying, fast military planes practicing maneuvers. Civilian aircraft may legally enter the areas, but it is best to either avoid entirely or check with the controlling agency to find out if the MOA is active. Hope that helps clear up the mystery!

15 to 20 years ago I was skiing @ Loon mtn and was surprised to look down the mtn. and see a couple pairs of A-10s flying by.
