Default Great Island Neighbors

A windstorm this week blew a large storage box off our dock on East Bear Island. This morning, a "downwind" neighbor returned it to us. Their efforts are greatly appreciated. 🐻

Good for them! And I will say that in general that is how islands neighbors are. If one sees a neighbor heading in with a stiff wind blowing, one runs over to grab a line. And islanders inventory of tools and spare parts is always at the ready to help a neighbor. No baking powder? We have some. We ran out of bourbon, oh thanks a lot.

Islanders stick together! I just did a "service call" with the assistance of another awesome neighbor to get the water back on for one of our older neighbors. Often we find "gifts" consisting of the ingredients for adult beverages on the deck following such missions... .

Not a bad Memorial Day weekend, looking forward to a great summer on the Lake !

Default Beyond the Island

The friendships developed during the summer often extend to the rest of the year. We have been invited to parties, graduations, (and have attended funerals) off-Island for many years. Our next-generation extended family members have continued friendships that began here on East Bear Island. 🐻

As I like to put it - the dynamics of being on an island are such that it keeps the people you don't want as neighbors out...

Default The best neighbors

We once borrowed a summer rental in Maine from our island neighbors. They explained everything and told us where they hid the keys. Afterward, we called to thank them and told them the house was unlocked, so we didn't need the keys, but we locked everything up tight when we left. And, by the way, "we all really enjoyed the hot tub"
pause...

"We don't have a hot tub."

Pause... Gotcha....followed by great laughter on both sides.
