Default Boating Education Classes

Think Spring!

NH Boating Education Classes are starting up this month in the Lakes Region. Registration is required and the classes tend to fill up fast.
For more information and schedules see:
http://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/n...ing-education/

New Hampshire has a mandatory boating education law. Everyone 16 years of age and older who operates a motorboat over 25 horsepower on New Hampshire waters must have a boating education certificate.

Thanks Knomad for reminding folks about getting their safe boating certificate!! I know from talking to some friends at the MP that they wrote a lot of tickets last year for people who don't have that card!! It's just like driving your car without a driver's license... I just wanted to point out that there is a difference between the "Class schedule" and the "Exam schedule" on the Dept. of Safety website... The class schedule is for people who want to sit in a classroom and be taught by Marine patrol staff... I think that is preferable (my opinion) because you can ask questions, hear explanations, and definitions, and even know what areas to focus on for questions that may be asked on the exam... Whereas, the exam schedule is for those people who take the course on line and just need to get certified... Here is the link for the class schedule... They are held everywhere around the state... It's quick and easy and once you do it, it is good for life... Never have to renew it like your driver's license... For what it's worth, I took mine at Winnisquam Marine in Belmont... They have a beautiful facility and classroom and provide restrooms and snacks... I think they try to hold one per month throughout the summer...

You take the class and test online then you take the last test in person.

Default URL for on-line class

www.boat-ed.com

My preference was the online course. Can go through the material at your leisure; go back to where you left off; take the sample quizzes/tests and see what you got right or wrong, etc.

If you do the coursework, the actual in-person test is easy.

If your goal is to just pass the proctored exam and get your certificate, the on-line course is very good. If you want to take it a step further and learn more about boating safely on Lake Winnipesaukee and the surrounding lakes, then I would recommend one of the instructor lead classes in the Lakes Region.

Default Depends on your background....

I would suggest that if one is an experienced boater and experienced with the lake, the online course is an excellent choice. If one is new to boating and NH lakes, I can see where the live class could be beneficial.

I took the course 15+ years ago at Glendale before it was required but they won't let me use it for my NH license. It's crazy since the course at Glendale was much more informative. I sold my camp on Squam and my boat 10 years ago and have not taken the test. So now I have to take the new test.

I guess it's not a big deal as the new course is extremely easy and I juts have to run to Concord to take the test. The bad part is thinking how many people on the water have no experience other than the NH test.

Machz:

Check the WEB site. There is a proctored test coming up April 25th in Moultonborough. I'm pretty sure that will be before ice-out this year.

If you have your boating license and have insured boats let your insurance company know about it. We recently switched to different offices with the same insurance company. The new office told us that all these years we should have been receiving a discount on our boat insurance. The other day a check for $150.00 came to us in the mail.

Default Lakes Region Power Squadron

The LRSPS offers a very good, comprehensive class as well that is fully recognized in NH. My son took it and said he got a lot out of it.

The schedule is as follows:

May 10 NH Boat Museum Wolfeboro
May 24 Moultonborough Library
June 28 Moultonborough Library

Reservations at (603) 490-9573, Ron LaVoie

Default Boating courses

Machz:

Whoever told you that the course that you took 15 years ago is no longer valid was just wrong. If the course that you took at Glendale was NASBLA approved (my guess is that it was a minimun of eight weeks long) so had to be and is good for life. The only way to lose it is by getting BUI and if so, tough luck.

The US Power Squadron does a great job in their boating classes and I recomend them.

The US Coast Guard Auxiliary is also teaching the classes on the Lake and we are trying to put a fun twist to it. We will deliver the classes to your yacht club, marina or what ever. I personally like to teach an "ladies only" class.

Too many ladies are not real sure of what to do with the boat when hubby has the big one or if they need to get off of an island to the mainland.

It is a real fun class and a great way to get together with your pals. You will be amazed at how much you can learn in a short time.

If there are any takers out there call me 603 455 7178 and we will make a plan.

And remember, it's all about boats so it's FUN!
