Default Subs in the Lakes Region

Is it me, or are subs in the Lakes Region comparatively expensive? For example, in my hometown, large subs are ~$8 and are sizable. Giuseppe's, Sub Crazy, Artie's, Elvio's, etc. are all $10 or so and not very big at all.

Interestingly, pizza is essentially the same at ~$11-12. Weird.

Locally, subs made at Subway or Sub Crazy are astronomically, out of this world, super expensive!

The Gilford and Plymouth Walmarts both have pre-made 12" subs in a deli cooler for under five dollars, which are actually pretty danged good .... and for some unknown reason ..... do not have the 9% NH food tax.

The Gilford Walmart has individual donuts like a large Boston creme pie, chocolate donut for 68-cents. For a really good cup of totally free, k-cup coffee ..... hit the Meredith Village Saving Bank in front of Lowe's.

Naw, JoJo's subs are $7.50 and, as you said, awesome. It's everywhere else that seems out of line. Again, comparatively.

If you haven't had a steak bomb sub from Huck's Hoagies (Wolfeboro), you haven't had a great one (huge-delicious- $8-$10)

I’ve never had Hucks but the steak bomb at Winnisquam deli is pretty amazing. When a sub is that good, who cares what it costs.

Agreed, within reason. Artie's at $10 felt like a rip-off.

I'm coming from Marc's/Benedetti's, so I'm a bit spoiled.

Gotta check out Huck's. The Wolfgang's in Wolfeboro was awesome a couple weeks back.

John's Roast Beef is really good for subs. They pack them full.

Default John's Roast Beef

I second John's. Unfortunately after living/working in the Nashua area, my standard bearer is Cahill's Super Sub in Hudson. No one comes close until I had a Philly steak bomb from a street vendor in Philly.

Default Jo Jo's #10

JoJo's #10 on crusty bread, loaded. The best Italian I've ever had and I've tried many. We try to make it a staple once every week we're up there. Be prepared to get sloppy. They are definitely NOT overpriced and cheaper than many other places I've gotten them. They're under $9 and are really good for two meals.

Default Sub Crazy

Sub Crazy in Meredith, next to Case 'n Keg, has amazing subs. The large italian is about $9 but it will easily feed two people, maybe three. I tried eating one on my own once and couldn't do it. http://www.subcrazymeredith.com/

This is one of the places I'm not jazzed about. Chicken parm was over $10 last time and not awesome.

We went there a few times and I wasn't impressed either. We've been picking up cold cut sandwiches at the Mobil across from the town docks and found them to be better than Sub Crazy.

Do any local places make a better sub than was once available at Waldo Peppers?

That was the gold standard.

Default Submarines

When I first saw this thread I thought it was about personal submarines (1-4 people). Seeing that is not the case, it did start me wondering if anyone has one or knows of one that has operated in the Lake? Prices seem to range from about $18K up to the millions so it's not inconceivable that there has been one out there lurking.

My wife and I walk to town on weekend mornings and get our coffee and a freshly cooked muffin there also.
You have to get there early though, the muffins are usually gone by 9am.

Default Mobil gas station subs...

When I watched her place my sub on a wrap paper, I thought,.."Not a bad size".

I was wrong, she then picked up the "other half" and placed that on the paper.

Holy cow!

Does anyone want to help me eat the rest of this thing?

They also make their own bread.

And it's a gas station.

The sub/pizza kitchen at Meredith Mobil has a stainless sink with town water, and it is deep enough to fill one of those large blue, 5-gal water lug-a-jugs that get used for island water, and the boss lady there lets you fill it up for free should you be out of potable water for your mega-million dollar, Winni camp.

Plus, there's a rest room around behind the no charge atm with hot, hot water in its' small sink that's useful if you've been messing with a 6-gallon boat, portable gas tank to wash the gas off your hands.

Also, ditto that for the LaDaSun ..... a triple freebie ..... and you get to run it all direct across Rt-3 from Lake St without having to use that awful hawk signal which stops all the traffic for two minutes whenever the hawk button is pushed.

Anyone know, did Rusty hold onto Meredith Mobil or did it get sold along with the hotels? He probably still owns it since it's a 6am-10pm gas station with a super location and it is not a hotel?

Correction... you did not have to pay. You chose to pay out of the kindness in your heart. If it were a case of “had to pay”, your hard earned money would have passed thou the hands of the government first.

..... no, was not me ..... the Meredith Village Savings Bank, a healthy five minute walk along the bay, has k-cup coffee for free in a very high quality paper cup! The bank makes you feel like a million dollars.

Heard the bank will give you a 12" meatball w/ melted mozzarella cheese on Fridays from 4-6pm, when you deposit a local paycheck for $200 or more, at their take out window!

Sub? Really? The Lakes Region had definitely been taken over by flatlanders from the NYC area. Grinders people, grinders are in NH.

Hesitant to disclose, but not sure how there hasn't been one mention for Skelly's. They make an eye-talian sub like you dream about. Had plenty of others there, too, and they never disappoint.

Another thread that amazes me.... Everyone talking about sub prices, but not many talking about sub types... sizes etc.....

Jo Jo's in Moultonborough is about the best for price and quality of a cold sub.... I am in love with the #10.....

I haven't found subway in Moultonborough any more or less expensive they any other subway shop I have been in, all over this country....

Overall Jo Jo's prices and sizes are pretty comparable to what I see where I live in Massachusetts.....

As for Aritie's I have only eaten there once, and wasn't happy with the quality or size, and I haven't been back....

Overall I don't think sub prices are all that bad around the lake.... however if you used to ordering a small sub at home, and go to Jo Jo's for the crusty sub roll, I guess I can see where the price might seem high.... But get something the same size at home, and I believe you will find out they are a decent value....

You missed the sense of humor-gyros is sort of pronounced heroes. Thus my little joke that you didn't get.

That's ok. You're entitled. It wasn't a very good joke anyway. Too dry.

Default Subs in Lakes Region

How about Full Beli Deli in Wolfeboro. It looks to me as if they have gone to only one size, 12", but some pricing differences depending upon what you order. I have never been disappointed with their products. The nomenclature for this type of product changes as you travel around the country, but the proliferation of Subway shops has done a lot to spread the word "sub" as a universal term, notwithstanding local terminology.

Default ..... Subway promo alert!

Effective January 9, 2020: Subway is running a 6" sub promotion for 2.99, slider sandwich for 1.89, with roast chicken or veggie delight ...... anyone here actually do this recent promo at a lakes region Subway and live to tell about it ..... so, how was it?

Any chance the 4.99 foot long sub will ever return? Like, if they can do a promo low price for the 6" sub, then why not also do a 12" sub promo, too!

What? You want a review for a $2.99 sub before you risk your own cash?

Maybe you should start with the $1.89 slider before you take the big risk!

Anyone remember the grinders that were on sale at Robbins Store. I believe Shirley, a long time employee made them at home and brought them in to sell at Fred’s. Very simple ingredients. Bologna, American cheese, light salami, and pickle. They were great.

Shirley Talbot.

I also remember the Italians that were piled up next to the cash register at lake shore deli in Meredith. The longer they sat there the better they were. Was right next to the Gulf station, which is also gone and was about where the movie theater is now

Default Mosquito Bridge

The store at mosquito bridge on Winnisquam makes a heck of a sub also! Their brownies, which are made fresh daily, are the best I have ever had bar none!!

Question ..... the six foot sub from Walmart!

Walmart has a six foot sub sandwich tray with three 2-foot long sub sections made with French bread for $39.98, plus tax.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Marketside...Tray/151031433

Made with your choice of ingredients and intended to serve 25-30 people at a party get-together but with a little home preparation could feed a party of one for a couple, three weeks, or something. With slicing it into 30 equal portions of 2.4-inches each and wrapping in plastic food wrap and freezing, it could be good to eat with maybe 90-seconds baking in the microwave and some mayo or mustard or both mayo and mustard, heavy, together!

Like ...... how good is that! Makes you hungry just thinking about it, doesn't it!

I know N.H. will add a 9% tax, but does Massachusetts add any tax for this food item?

So...what did the rest of the family eat?
I agree! Many moons ago I camped at the LI Bridge campground and we frequented JoJo’s for subs and STEAKS! Nice butcher shop with some great beef!

Default Mobil Station on Whittier Hwy, Meredith...

Makes a surprisingly good Italian, quite large, for $8.79.

I've heard their pizzas are good also.

Across from Town Docks.

Default Fantastic Sandwiches

Awesome subs / sandwiches, .. whatever you call it, no matter the price or size either, I will buy their pastrami, Italian, meatball, etc. Really, really good.
