Our very own Weirs Beach Boater has recently been promoted to Captain on The M/S Mount Washington!!!!!

Congratulations, Captain Finnerty, on this most amazing accomplishment!!! I wish you many years of happiness aboard our beloved Mount!

I'd be interested to find out. Last summer I spoke with someone on the lake who runs pontoon charters. He told me that there is a lic for over 40' boats. And you basically have to goto marine patrol and demo you can run a boat that size. He said it would qualify you for the Mount. I'm not sure i believe all that.

I'm familiar with USCG licensing. I'm just wondering how it applies to the lake and larger boats there. Or maybe they have their own licensing system.

NH offers what they refer to as a "Commercial Boat License". It used to cost $4.00 and had to be renewed every 2 years. A few years ago, they changed it to $15.00, and is good for 5 years now. I suspect that this is all that is required to "legally" operate the Mt. Washington, but perhaps the owners of the Mount themselves require a USCG license for anyone operating the vessel.

Also, if one holds this State of NH Commercial Boat License, then one does not need a Boater Education Certificate.

I believe the company's insurer has a big say in what license is required to be Captain. I am guessing it is a USCG 50T or 100T.

It would be interesting to know what is required.

You need the NH commercial license. It is a different, more involved, test than what most people on the lake have. The license has nothing to do with the size of the boat.

Anyone who operates a boat on the lake for pay needs that license. That means if you are delivering jet skis for pay you need that license. That means if you are a realtor taking clients on your boat to show property, you need that license. If you are a boat mechanic and you take a clients boat out for a test drive, you need that license.

Many of the local marinas, and their employees, are in violation of that requirement every day.

Thank you all. It is truly humbling to join the very short list of Captains of this Icon of Winnipesaukee. It is not a position I take lightly, and one I am proud to say I worked my way up to, and through the ranks. I started on the Mount in High School, and first held the position of Grill Cook! Later in life I returned during the summers, as Deckhand, Deck Officer, 2nd Engineer(with the old Enterprise engines!) Small Boat Skipper on Doris, and Sophie, and for the last 10 seasons Pilot aboard the Mount. I hope to see you all onboard sometime soon! To answer the Licensing Question, It's NH Commercial License, to achieve licensing from the State, first a written exam is taken, then you do have to undergo a check ride from NH Dept of Safety Marine Patrol. On a company level, no one starts on the Mount, all Mount Captains, and Pilots, have started on the smaller vessels, and only progress if the company has deemed them fit to do so. Hope that answers the questions. We are not CG waters, although some Captains do have a CG license as they have done some ocean work in previous positions.
