Default For all you sleuths out there

Our fam spent a long airbnb weekend in Well's, Maine this past October. By the way, this is a wonderful area with lots of wide walking beaches, walking trails and touristy things to do if you like that sort of thing.

We were walking along Ocean Avenue and came upon this sign hanging over a front porch, seemingly promoting our great lake by thumbing it's nose at the magnificent Atlantic Ocean directly across the street. With the deep reach of our Forum members I was wondering if one of you just might (I realize it's a stretch) have a connection/awareness of this sign and could provide context. This has kept me curious over the past few months.

I also note that the spelling of the sign is incorrect (Winnepesaukee versus Winnipesaukee) - - unless this is an alternative back-in-the-day spelling I've never see before.

Default Not necessarily wrong

This spelling of "Winnipesaukee" is not necessarily wrong, just different. In years past it has been mentioned there are at least 52 variations of the name.

In Alton, the Masonic Lodge name is Winnipisaukee Lodge. Where JP China is, the was a hotel called Winnipesogee House.

So, Winnepesaukee isn't necessarily wrong. Heck, in Wells, it might mean The Smile of the Great Ocean Spirit.
