Just had the first accumulation of snow for the season at Black Cat this evening. Snow began around 10 pm and changed to rain around 1 am. Getting windy out there now.

Yes Rander, Yuki is ready. He did add a new member to the team in October.

Truman has joined the staff. He was homeless and needed some health issues taken care of. He's doing great and is looking forward to working with Yuki and Leo.

We have had the first inch of snow at Black Cat. Snowfall for November was a bit behind last November but only trivially. Last November we had twice the snow of this November but it's a difference of an inch. Both events were pretty similar... last year we got two inches and this year we got an inch.

Sunday night as the warm front approached it slowed down significantly and the snow held on longer than forecast. Then the sleet and freezing rain held on longer than forecast.

I was driving up from Rochester and got the year's first hands-on introduction to winter driving as Rt 11 and 25 were all snow covered the whole way. I think it caught the road crews off guard.

An inch of snow remained on the ground all through December 1 and a trace has remained since.

This week we can expect above-normal temps today and tomorrow. We are having a break from the pre-Thanksgiving warmth. Winter will return on Friday. We have a chance of snow on Sunday.

Looking at the upcoming info, I see that Saturday (tomorrow) is apparently the last day for the foreseeable future that will be both sunny and above-freezing. Saturday night we start to get some accumulating snow in here, and Sunday we have a light snow event - I'm thinking 3 inches as an average right now.

Monday is sunny but 20s in the wake of the storm, probably windy too, at least in the morning.

Tuesday into Wednesday we get snow-ice-rain, with more snow up north and more rain south. I wouldn't be surprised if the rain/snow line got hung up farther south than forecast. That's because I've noticed warm fronts have been having a hard time getting through recently, but don't bet too much on that yet -- just be ready for that potential.

In the wake of the midweek storm it looks like we're going back into the "cool and unsettled" pattern we had for much of the summer except this time around we'll be "cold and unsettled." Instead of rain showers, we'll have snow showers. As was the case in summer, we'll have sun thrown in each day as well. Looks like the temps will be in the 20s with lows in the teens.

Whatever you want to get done outside, Saturday looks like the last truly great day to get it done for a while. After that, you'll be fighting various forms of winter weather.

Side note: The lake water temp at Black Cat Island Weather Station is now down to 40 and continues to drop. Snowfall early in the week followed by cold air at the end of the week should push it down to 37 or 38. It will be within reach of freezing at that point, given the right conditions. Bear in mind, we always have to wait for just the right conditions: Usually a very calm, cold night followed by a cold, not-too-windy day.

Anyone seen any signs of "lake flip" yet? I.e. turbid, unclear water?

I assume the water has flipped up north of Moultonboro bay towards Ambrose cove. There has been ice most of the week - 1/3 to 1/2 across from the West side. Thrown rocks bounce off the ice. Minks are walking on it with impunity.

Cold front has passed the lake in the last couple hours. We're down to 24 and dropping fast. Winds now gusting to 39 mph out of the NW. Water temp just went to 39 at 2 feet and 40 at 10 feet. When the 2-foot depth gets to about 35 the surface usually has ice. We may reach that point next weekend. Tonight and the first part of tomorrow will chill the water off for sure.

Since this is a snow thread, here's today's snow report from the lake. Black Cat got 0.1" snow this morning and another 0.1" this evening. We're getting snow showers off and on right now, due to the topography. The wind is hitting the NW-facing slopes of various mountains and rising into much colder air aloft, and the moisture condenses out as snow when that happens. The atmosphere is very quickly drying out as this Canadian cold blast moves in, so that should end the snow shower activity by morning except over the higher summits of the Whites.

The snowstorm has now begun over most of northern New England and snow will become
heavy this afternoon and evening. Wind will become strong out of the northeast,
shifting to north and then west this evening with gusts of 50 mph possible. It
will blow the powdery snow into large drifts and reduce visibility to zero at
times. New Hampshire and adjacent Maine will get at least a foot of snow, except
at the Massachusetts border where amounts will be 8-12 inches. Many areas af NH
and ME will get 16 inches, and a few areas will get 20 inches.

The National Weather Service in Gray Maine is advising that travel this afternoon
be reserved for emergencies only. If you must travel, be prepared to survive inside
your car for several hours in case you are stranded. Expect long delays, as blowing
snow will limit the effectiveness of plowing operations. Temperatures are in the
single numbers and teens across the state, which is limiting the effectiveness of
road salt.

There are still 20,000 NH households without power from the ice storm last week,
and more outages are possible this afternoon and evening as strong winds associated
with this storm affect trees already weakened by the ice.

There may be some sleet mixed in with the snow around Portsmouth this afternoon
for a short time, but this will quickly change back to snow. This storm will be
"bombing out" or experiencing rapid intensification as it passes just a few miles
off the New England coast this evening.

Thunderstorms are possible within the snow. Thundersnow is known for being very
intense... a winter version of what you would expect from a summer thunderstorm...
and can drop several inches of snow in just minutes during which visibility is
just a few feet.
