We noticed a haze backdrop to the stratus clouds; maybe smoke from out-west. It did make some nice color.

Sadly, you're right pollution does make for some gorgeous sunsets, sometimes.

Do you really think smoke from fires out west would reach here and be visible?

Smoke in the upper atmosphere from out west made for several hazy days last week.

Yes. We were in Bar Harbor and the haze was also there. The Bangor TV station showed a US map of the smoke plume extending out over the Atlantic.

Yes and my wife and I both could smell it slightly during those calm days.

Alas, the ragweed prevented me from smelling it.
