Default Wind

Winds are supposed to pick up (11 MPH Th, 14 MPH Fr) over the next couple days. That may speed things up a bit.

It's been a very strange melting season. I'm over by Suissevale and usually that melts early and the lake ice out a week or more later. This year it seems like it will all happen around the same time.

I had people snowmobiling in front of the house on Saturday, just a few feet of open water along the edge. Today I have about 100 ft of open water.

Default Last hold outs

From what I can see on the webcams (would be nice to have an airplane right about now)... Center Harbor may still be blocked. Wolfeboro and Alton Bay appear to be open, but we can't really see the mouth of the bays.

I am not sure if Meredith counts as it was not on the original definition of ice-out. It appears to still have ice from what is shown on the WeirsCam.

Given the incredible amount of melt today... Smith Cove went out near the Glendale Yacht Club docks.... I think tomorrow will be the day.

We are heading to Rattlesnake tomorrow late afternoon... Woo Hoo (picture me jumping up and down screaming). I am hoping we have power if not... I will be ready for an early bedtime and take pictures of the sunrise on Friday.

You will know we have power if you see Snake Eyes sending pictures.

Default Oops

Sorry jeffk, just saw your picture of Meredith Bay. That is what I anticipated from the looks of Pine Island South and the WeirsCam. I still think that will go out tomorrow.

Chestnut Cove still has son ice at the shoreline... It does not count towards official ice-out.

Rev up that engine Mr. Emerson!

Default Three seasons: mud, bug and winter

North of Moultonborough Bay, the ice really melted big time today. There was light wind moving things around and by the end of the day, lots of little ice islands and a few bigger sheets left. The first few feet of the sheets were dark and grainy, rippling as small waves from dock bubblers hit the edges. As JeffK said, very unusual melting patterns for this part of the lake, which is usually iced out well before the other parts. This year, its sort of everything melting at once. The snow is mostly gone from the yard, about a month ahead of time. Mud season is all but over! But.... Here come the bugs.

So, if ice-out gets declared today, Wednesday, March 21, Thursday or Friday: then it will be an all-time record. Seems likely to happen to me.....could be tomorrow or Friday.

Watching ice melt is a lot more interesting when there's a real attractive girl in the view......as in catching some sun in yesterday's 80-degree sunny temps.......most times around these here parts of New Hampshire.....everybody out and about is an overweight senior citizen. So, why is NH so fat? Should be that the legislature should come up with some type of a Fat Tax; if your Body Fat Index grows to #25 or more, than you must pay!

We pack on the winter weight to get us though the cold NH winters.
Only this year was more like a more southern winter, much more southern.

Default Almost.........

It looks like a lot went out over night. The cams still show ice in the outer Center Harbor area, Pine Island, Black Cat Island.... come on folks get those fans out there and blow it away!

Moultonboro still looks icy... but does not count for ice-out.

Hopefully Emerson will be taking a couple of flights today!

I am almost packed...

Default 19 Mile Bay

Has anyone been by 19 Mile Bay in the last couple of days? We are wondering if we can get out to Whortleberry via Pier 19.

there was still some slush/ice yeasterday afternoon. But things opened up in the barbers pole lastnight and we launched a boat this morning off our beach. Did a little cuise around and can't get very far north from where it opens up between cow island and the main land.

Default When will the ice disappear?

For days now, I go back and forth between the Bear Island cam and the Weather cam hoping for open water. Now the Bear cam view looks good but the Weather cam at the south end of Black Cat has ice floes.

I thought we might be just hours away from ice out but then I saw how much there is in front of Snake Eyes. I would guess several weeks of melting before that area is ice free.

Didn't there used to be a webcam at this location years ago? I seem to remember this view as one of the first "cams"

Are any of the cameras still showing ice? The last one I could see was weathercam and that is clear. The Governor's Island thumbnail showed ice when I last looked but that looked like a few days ago and the current image looks like a fine summer day, a big change from midday.

So... where is there still ice?

Default Northern end of the lake

I know this doesn't count for ice out but I figured I'd toss it out.

19 Mile Bay is mostly ice free, the remainder I would expect to be gone later today or tomorrow. However, there is ice by the mouth of the bay around Farm Island. It's hard to tell exactly how much or how solid.

20 Mile Bay is still pretty full of ice. Probably not clear until Saturday or later.

Moultonborough Bay in front of Melvin Village has a lot of open water with a good sized piece of ice in the middle. Clear possibly tomorrow or Saturday.

The ice in front of me by Suissevale just disappeared.

There is moderate ice at the end of States Landing Road in Moultonborough that will probably last to Saturday or a bit later.

The winds seem pretty calm by me and that is slowing things down a bit. If the winds actually get up to 17 MPH tomorrow as predicted, that could clear things up faster.

I have a Tai Chi class in Center Harbor this evening so I'll see what that looks like. Thanks to the DST change I will be getting there before dark.

Think Don can close this out by dark if Emerson flys this evening. All ports of call seem clear for the Mount to sail. Now just need April 1 to get here so I can catch that big tasty salmon

Two things I can think of for the lack of an ice out declaration at this point:
1. Center Harbor
2. Emerson didn't fly this afternoon

Oh well, I was only off by 26 hours. I had yesterday @ noon. Broke the all-time record set in 2010 by three days, which is impressive. Who knew watching ice melt could be fun? Awesome photos!

Most of the "weak ice" is on the north side of the Hole and the Wall towards the Grave Yard. Between Ragged and Cow all was broken up today. My trek from 19 mile to Cow was epic to say the least. The ice was thin enough to pass but yet in all directions.

could be tomorrow, high temps, 30 mph winds, low humidity can lead to alot of ice being pushed around.. enough to clear it up some... if they fly tomorrow afternoon, i wouldn't rule out the possibility of a record

Yesterday at about 7-pm the area from south Bear Island to Mark-Timber-Governor's and Meredith neck was about 75% iced in with a slushy layer of slush ice.

As of 4-pm today, the same area was all ice free and all turned into liquid water.

What a difference a day can make.....

Default Snake Eyes does not want to wake up

It is lovely out here on the island. Snake Eyes is not powering on. I will troubleshoot in the morning. I think the motherboard may be zapped. It happened about three years ago.. I will take a real picture and put it in place of the January one.... I see people are toying with me.

There ice along the shore of most pf the broads side of the island. Many breakwaters have snow. By some sort of luck we have no snow or ice.

I have not seen any debris... Such a gentle ice-out.

Tomorrow we will put in the water and move the deck furniture out... Since it is still March, it will probably snow next week!

It is good to be home again!

IG, That is great that you are out there in March. Just the other day I was looking at photos from when we opened the place in the spring of '99. I'm sure Charlie is smiling upon you today. Best wishes!

Post Snake Eyes Does Not Want To Wake Up

Not to worry IG. I'm sure once it gets a look at Ice Out tomorrow that it will fire off and come back to life!!
We all understand how an webCam can be finicky in an winter isolated area environment. At the same time though, we are very thankful to you for giving us a view! Daily visits to Snake Eyes has always been a favorite of ours!
Thanks To You,
Terry

IG, the external power supply on my NetCam died a few years ago. Maybe it's just that.

Default Can anyone find ice?

I don't think that any of the cams show any ice. So, ice out should be sometime this morning.

Default RIA Ramp ice?

Hi everyone,

Has anyone seen if the RIA Ramp still has ice at the bottom or not?

If the wind is low enough we'll be on Rattlesnake tonight.

Thanks

I was dropping my boat at the house in Moultonborough and Meredith and Center Horbor was clear but Moultonborough bay by Balmoral still had a bunch of ice. Also Lees mills had a lot of ice. I know they don't affect ICE OUT but just my .02 worth.

The announcement will be posted here on the forum and on the homepage of this site as soon as I find out.

Emerson Aviation makes the Ice-Out call and they post updates on their Facebook page. At about 9:45 they posted that they were going up for another look.

When I got home from work last night my sons said they had heard on NECN that Ice out was declared.
I can't confirm it though.
I consider ice out to be the first day I can get to my camp on Sleeper which was Tuesday. The rest is just details. Ha Ha

In post #234, yesterday, I indicated taht I saw Ice Out declared by WMUR. Well I went back to look and sure enough its there. HOWEVER, the date was March 24th 2010. I was so excited that ice was out that I didn't bother to look at the date. Sorry!

Traffic is through the roof this morning as you can tell by the slower loading times. I've never seen the server loads so high. Although there are lots of visitors on the forum 3 out of 4 hits today are going to the WeirsCAM.

Ice-Out week has always been the busiest week of the year on this site.

Going out to Ratlesnake this afternoon to open up and spend the first night of the season. Riding with nominees for the Darwin Awards; could be trouble!

Thanks to all who have posted pictures, ice and snow reports throughout this short winter season. It's been fun and you have made those of us who live far from the lake feel so much closer.

Just got back from my first ride of the season. One word. Windy!!!

Very rough on the way out, almost flat on the way back 2 hours later. I saw 3other boats while I was out on the water, and a few docked at Glendale and in Smith Cove.

Lots of pinecones and blow downs to deal with.

I drove around the north side of the lake today. No ice in Alton, Wolfeboro, The Basin, NineteenMile Bay, MelvinVillage, CenterHarbor, Meredith, or PaugusBay (as predicted). The only ice I could find was in TwentyMile Bay; About 2-3 acres.

There was the usual spectacular view at Abenaki Tower. Other than the snow on Gunstock, it looked like fall (no leaves).

Sorry for not letting the folks on Winni Forum know first hand that I did declare "Ice out" this morning at 0930 (930AM) March24th 2012. This goes in the record books as the earliest. It was a beautiful morning for it.
