Default 90% Chance We're Relocating and Wanted to Say Thank You

Hey everyone! My family and I are planning to relocate to the south, and I made a video that reflects on the bittersweet feelings of leaving and thought you might enjoy it.

I also wanted to express my gratitude to everyone who's contributed to the forums. Although I don’t post often, I read them regularly, and they truly help me feel connected to the lake community. We live in CT but have been visiting NH several times a year for about 40 years, and during that time, we fell in love and talked about moving to the area.

Unfortunately, housing prices and a challenging job market make that difficult. Plus, as I've gotten older, I no longer like cold, New England winters.

I'm hoping we can visit at least one more time so we can enjoy the beautiful autumn foliage, and after that, we'll have to plan some summer vacations.

Anyway...here's the link. Thanks!

Nice Video. You'll be back sometime. Once it's in your heart, it's there and it sounds like it's in yours' I hate the cold too, too bad it couldn't be warm all year round.

Florida. My in-laws are getting older, and we want to be near them. We're actually going to rent, so if we end up not liking it, we can move back without much fuss.

It's definitely in my heart. I keep telling my wife, "It's not that cold..." but she's not buying it. Haha.

Great video. Essentially, 2:30 of why so few places in the country remotely compare...including the beauty of the winter.

Happy trails, though, like others have said, it feels like it won't be long until you miss it and return.

I am in Florida too. You should keep on the forum and you will stay in touch that way. And then you will never actually be gone.

Great video, Mark, and I see you have more of them online. I'll be tuning in to those too (already viewed the Candlewood Lake one). Each year my wife and I are in CT for seven months and, by April, are very anxious to get back on Lake Winni for the next five. It's a good balance that allows us to get more rain/less snow in the winter - plus be near our southern New England family and friends. Next summer will be our tenth on the lake...which I know pales in comparison to some of the lonnnnng-term lakers on this forum. Yet, I'd be lying if I said I didn't dream of 365 days-per-year warmth. It's just that my wife likes the cold weather and, well, happy wife/happy life. Sounds like your issue in reverse.

Come back soon and in the meantime, stay on the forum and send us some video stories from Florida.

Best of luck.

Default Nice Video

My job relocated me to many places in the US. But there is no place as special as the Lakes Region. Winnipesaukee has been my home since the 50s. In the late 90s, I moved to Winnisquam because of taxes and the population explosion. I can't bear to leave.

Now retired, I live here year-round. I enjoy lake boating, mountain hiking skiing, and everything in between. I love being active.

My family is in New England. They visit me often, so I don't have to go elsewhere. They love to spend time in the Lakes Region. Vermont, Texas, and Connecticut where my daughters live are beautiful, but their heart is the Lakes Region.

I have many friends in Florida, Arizona, and Colorado who look forward to their annual trip to the Lakes Region. Some even decided to make NH their permanent home. A Florida couple, who are my neighbors can't believe how much they miss, the 4 seasons. Now call NH their home.

I have 3 couples staying here because of Milton. They call Sarasota County their home. All had warnings from their insurance companies that may have limited coverage. I pray they will be OK. My cousin is here from Ft Meyers, the community he lives in was struck by a tornado. He has no idea if his beautiful home is safe. All are talking about moving North.

I have discovered the Rangeley Lake area. Very beautiful. A lot cheaper and low tax. I bought a farmhouse for investment. I am planning a family holiday at the farm. Saddleback is a beautiful mountain and plenty of trails for snowshoeing and x-country skiing. I just might move here because of the solitude. To each his or her own.

I could never live in Florida. Even though I hate snow as I get older the cold doesn't bother me that much.
You can always put on more layers if it's too cold, but you can only take off so much if it's too hot before being arrested.

I say that all the time to everyone!!! I said it to a cop once and had to think about that for a second before they laughed and thanked me for not taking all my clothes off.

Thank you so much! In CT, we live in a heavily developed suburban area, and maybe that's why I don't like winter. There's nothing to see except house after house of snow piled up in front of their yards and extra tall mountains at the sides of the driveways.

Whenever we've been to NH in the winter, whether to hike up the mountains in Franconia when I was younger or to visit the towns on the lake, it's so different looking and nicer than at home. Winter is actually beautiful in NH.

And yes, the more I think about it, the more I think we'll be back. We've decided to rent rather than buy and see how we like it, and if we don't, we can head back north. Or, when we retire, maybe do the snowbird thing where we live in both places, but that's still awhile down the road.

I hope you did okay in the hurricane. We will definitely keep in touch through the forums. I read them all the time and have been reading NH newspapers online for years. I sometimes think I know more about that area than I do about my own state. Haha.

Thank you. Will definitely do that.

CT doesn't get much snow anymore, and I do like that, but I also miss snow too. I just don't like it when it turns brown and stays on the roads for weeks on end. We actually got such little snow last year that we would watch the weather in NH and head north when it looked like there was going to be a big storm because we missed not having any here.

Most of my family has packed up and moved south, and only my dad is left in the state, and he's going to move and live with us. I'll like that. We'll be moving near to where my wife's parents live, so she'll get to see them more often, which will be good for her.

The one thing I'm worried about are the FL boaters. They, ummm...seem to be in a different league than New England boaters. From watching YouTube videos, many don't seem to have much dock etiquette or experience, and they certainly don't lend a hand when someone needs help.

Hopefully, we can bring some of the northern hospitality to the area and have a positive effect.

You sound like my dad. He was in the service, and my family moved 12 times over a 20+ year span. I came along later in my parent's lives and didn't experience a lot of the moves my brother and sisters did and don't remember any that I did. When his time in the service ended, he got a job at Raytheon near Boston, and that's where we settled until they moved to CT.

He tells me that of all the places he's lived, he liked Hawaii the best, but his second choice is New England because of the seasons and variety of weather.

It's great going to FL when it's February or March and you're tired of the winter, but I wonder how it'll be having warm temps year round. I actually don't mind the cold or winter. It's not as nice as summer, but it's not terrible. I just don't like all the snow when it turns brown and gross, and I'd rather a longer warm season to boat and be on the water.

All my family and my wife's except for my dad and 2 sisters of my wife have moved south for various reasons, and we've all kind of "splintered apart" now.

When we move, my dad's going to move in with us, and we don't see my wife's sisters very often. They visit their parents in FL a lot, so we can see them then, which will be about the same amount we see them now.

When I was young, we used to vacation to the Rangeley area. The lakes are beautiful in that area, and it's so remote. I love things like that. When we go camping, we go to the White Mountains and camp in the national forests campgrounds because they're remote. We enjoy getting away from the hustle and bustle and don't want to stay in a place that has a rec hall with pinball machines and bingo at night. We want "leave me alone to enjoy nature" places.

I hope the homes of your friends that are staying with you are okay. We're worried about that aspect of living in FL and plan to rent for the first year we're there to make sure we like it and to see how things like housing and insurance are. If it turns out to not be good, we may find ourselves back in New England quickly.

My in-laws that in the summer you need to have all your outside stuff done by 8-9am and then you can go back out after 4-5pm.

Funny thing is, we check the temps, and CT is often hotter than where my in-laws live, but our humidity might be 55% and they're 85%, so I think that's the difference.

Wow! Thank you so much. I really appreciate that. My dream would be to live in the area and be able to make travel and promotional videos for realtors and towns and things like that.

I typically make videos are about boating and places we visit - all fun things, but this one was different than any I've made before, so I wasn't sure how it would turn out. I was pretty sad when I made it, but I'm feeling better now. Thank you again!!

Great video, I think you expressed the feelings of everyone at the lake. Remember, it's never "fair well", it's always "until we meet again".

That's how I'm starting to feel now. At first I thought it would be goodbye, which made me sad, but it's not. Yes, we won't be able to decide last minute to hop in the car and drive up, but we can take aways take vacations, which will make it more special I think.

Leaving should not feel like a funeral. The Lakes Region is a "no wake" zone! It will not be totally gone from you.

It does get cold up here in winter.

If you're referring to the Haulover inlet videos that are popular on YouTube, that is not representative of the boating in general. Actually, Miami is just its own little world in many aspects.

On average you'll likely find that boaters in Florida will be helpful and far more skilled than the average inland lake boater.

The year round warm temps are nice, IMO, one thing you might notice is that Thanksgiving and Christmas really sneak up on you because there are no major weather cues that tell you you're heading into holiday season. Putting up and taking down outdoor decorations in 70 degree weather is much less burdensome than doing so in freezing temps

Hi - Yes, I was referring to the Haulover area and most of the boat ramps that are shown in a lot of videos. I imagine the creators tend to show the "worst" cases because those probably get the most views and it's probably not as bad as videos make it out to be.

My in-laws live in Brevard County and other family lives in Pensacola, but we aren't certain what are we'd want to live in, so we visited this weekend and looked at a lot of different areas, and you're right. Miami seemed to be its own little world. It was nice, but I wouldn't want to live there. Our favorite area was Jupiter, but everything is so different than New England, so we're going to take it easy and not rush into anything.

Smile Pensacola

Pensacola being on the gulf coast a lot
more laid back than Miami and Close to Panama City , Fort Walton and Destin. A lot of great areas along that coast
line and many memories
