Thanks for the beautiful movie. It was 4 minutes of total serenity. Boy, do I miss the lake! I actually felt homesick when I heard the loons. Is it June yet?

Boy, Does that make me homesick. I am sitting in Florida with the temperature around 80 with bright sunshine but it does not come close to New Hampsha.

The year opened with a memorably warm day and un-frozen lake, as temps topped out at 60 on the 6th of January. The lake's cold water kept the island from reaching near 70 as many inland stations did that day. Even still, the month averaged a full degree colder than the memorably sub-freezing February, which came out to 23.0. Surprisingly, January also had a colder extreme than February, with -6 F occurring just 20 days after the area's warmest winter temps in decades.

February bottomed out at -3, but produced 20 straight days below freezing and 14 straight days with lows in the single numbers. 23 of its 28 days were below freezing, and the warmest daily minimum was 18 degrees. Although we may remember February for its snow, there was only one major snowstorm, which dropped 14.4 inches on the 14th.

March brought two snowstorms and totaled almost as snowy as February. It also brought the coldest weather of the year, with temps on the 9th bottoming out at -12. It was the final morning of a four-day arctic blast that knocked temps below zero each day, and for three consecutive days it did not rise above 13 degrees. On the 6th, it failed to reach zero during daylight hours, though the official recorded high for the calendar day was 8 degrees at 12:01 a.m. This weather was also unusual in that it came with the driest air in several years, with dewpoints dropping to -27, and winds that gusted to 49 mph blowing snow across the lake ice, producing the kind of conditions more typical of the White Mountain summits. There was also snow on the ground every day of the month. From January 14 to March 26 it was an inch or more.

April goes into our memories as the month that replaced the dwindling snowpack, canceling Center Harbor's Easter Egg Hunt (and many other spring events as well.) From the 4th to the 15th, we held on to an inch or more of snow on the ground, and the total snowfall for the month was a remarkable 14 inches. The top story of the month was the incredibly damaging storm of the 15th and 16th, which earned people in several states extra time to file tax returns. The storm produced 2.5 inches of rain, and its wind peaked at 64 mph on the island. For several hours it frequently gusted to 50 mph, and at the height of the storm the 10-minute sustained wind was 45 mph. The unusually solid lake ice for the time of year broke apart in the strong winds and destroyed every weaker object in its path. Our weather, true to its New England reputation, sent the temperature soaring to 76 degrees with sunny skies just a week later.

Summer had begun. May charted 4 days with temps of 80+, topping out at 87. June did a similar performance, flirting with 90 at the end of the month. The dry weather noted in March hung around, and many of this summer's hot days were without much humidity. There was an abundance of severe thunderstorms around the lake. Severe Thunderstorm Watches & Warnings, once heard just a handful of times each summer in this area, actually became an almost-tiring occurrence (their issuance is based on dangerous criteria and should therefore be taken seriously every time, just like a smoke alarm activation.) The rest of the summer was known for its dryness, in terms of lacking humidity and precipitation. This caused the over-full lake of April to drop near record low levels by the end of summer.

We sunned ourselves right through September as continued warm and dry weather held on later than normal, but we paid for it with the loss of foliage season, as leaves were at least 2 weeks behind schedule in fall 2007, and lacked their usual color when they did change. The lake temperature made a late-October swim possible without insanity.

In surprising fashion, the first flakes of the new snow season flew on November 7 - just about average - and the ground was white by Thanksgiving.

This led right into what would be one of the year's top 3 weather stories - December's snow. On the 3rd, over 10 inches of snow fell on the island, and it was just the beginning of a very white month. When it was all over, the month had seen 20 days with snowfall of at least a trace, 12 days with measurable snow, six days with snowfall of 3"+, three days with at least 6", and two 10"+ storms. There was at least 6 inches of snow on the ground from the 3rd onward, peaking at a depth of 18 inches on the 20th, 21st, and 22nd. The total was an incredible 42.1 inches, or about 40 percent of the snowfall for the calendar year.

That's right - about 40 percent. With significant help from the months of March and April, the year gave the northwest end of Lake Winnipesaukee a whopping 106.7 inches of snow in 2007. It was especially amazing, considering that the previous December gave the Lakes Region thunderstorms and temps in the 50s, and left us wondering if the lake would freeze at all that winter.

In my opinion, the 106-inch snowfall and December's 42" ties with the April 15-16 Nor'Easter and March's arctic cold outbreak as the three top weather events of 2007.
