Union Leader Story
Today's Manchester Union 4/10 has a story on page B1 regarding the speed limit issue and no matter which side you're on,the picture made me chuckle. The caption reads:A boater speeds accross lake Winnipesaukee at approximately 90 mph.The picture shows a performance boat that is not even on plane.......speed approximately 5mph.Someone should call Union Leader writer Paula Tracy and give her a lesson.

Good ole Summa Humma. I sent her an email as well. It seems that news organizations are more interested in shaping the news (and public opinion) than reporting it.

I too shot off a scathing note (to the Editor) --
We all should !! If my eyes don't decieve me --- thats not the Summa Humma eithor (the ONLY triple engine Fountain on the Lake that I'm aware of)- it was a prototype.

Hey, now they did say "approximately".
A really good point here is if the boat in question is in fact going 90 MPH, why/how was the photographer that close to it in the first place? Its either a really good telephoto lens and a steady hand or they didn't feel that unsafe being that close.

Pantom, I'm pretty sure it is Summa Humma / Mark B. That's a photo that was used in an older article where he was interviewed by the Union Leader. Regardless, it looks more like its going 9 than 90.

Another fine example of journalistic integrity and accuracy.

Integrity?
This writer should lose her/his job. The only thing worse than fabricating a story is plagurism.
Fire the politically motivated writer and boycott the paper! |

I sent a note indicating the caption seems careless
Here's the managing editor's reply:
'The photo was an Associated Press file photo, and, at the time it originally ran, there was a story published, again from the Associated Press not the New Hampshire Union Leader, on lake speeds and the owner of the boat ... I cannot vouch for the speed, but can assure you that had we gotten objections when it was originally run, it would have been killed from our photo files.' Okay, so you're taking an old photo from a completely different story and slamming it in there saying the guy is going over 90? Even worse imo. |

They Re-wrote The Caption?
I just checked the link back to the Onion Leader. The quoting of the speed of the boat is no longer mentioned. Any one else notice this?
WINNOCTURN Yes I did use the comments block at the end of the article! |

Thinking about it.
I think it's obvious that the boat operator was thinking about going 90 miles per hour.

Hope that 47' Fountain is back on the lake this year.....it's like a work of art or something....if Governor Arnold Swarztenegger had a boat, that would be the one. I think it had been listed in nhboat.com for 200k but it's not there now. Purple checks up front, bright yellow, and 60mph at 3000revs with three engines, if I remember correct.

For 2007, that three-engined Summa Humma could be burning gas at $12 every minute! I'd be "thinking about it" too! |

"Speeds across the lake"

ps - Can I go "speeds boating" if I don't have a speed boat ? Oh wait, I think according to the news our cruiser is a "speed boat".

I sent an e-mail yesterday voicing my displeasure with that rediculous caption.
