Default Meredith at the lights

Does the lights in Meredith still have cones etc rerouting traffic. Was up a couple weeks ago and had cones everywhere. Just want to know if I should go around.

As of yesterday afternoon they were still doing construction at that intersection. It was still one lane turning from Rte 25 to Rte 3 South.

They had night construction scheduled for Thursday PM, so hopefully it was to remove the cones and barriers for the summer.

They had a lane closed to repair the bridge I believe.

One lane turn now instead of 2 from 25 southbound to 3 toward 104. Crosswalk moved about 100 yards toward town docks from parking lot driveway exit. I think the cross walk at the gas station may be gone too, but was driving and forgot to look. Cones just after Barn z not there yet, I have a feeling they won't come back as you need to get in the left lane to turn left at the lights now. Will be interesting to see how it works at peak traffic. The light cycle for the left turn seems longer now too.

That was a long, expensive project and I still can't see any major changes. They changed the curbing and went to one crosswalk but it's still only one lane turning left in the south lane.
If they install a traffic light at the crosswalk it should help a lot but other than that it seems pretty much as it was.

Is the one turning lane permanent? I think moving the crosswalk is good, it's a narrower section of the road so people should be able to cross more quickly. A light synced with the intersection light would be a good idea. Right now at that point when you get to the crosswalk you cross, stopping traffic. I think queuing up to wait for a cross signal will help in the long run.

The project is not complete. It has just been suspended for the summer. I am surprised that it is still just one left turn lane on to Rte. 3S. Hopefully that is temporary and they go back to two lanes before summer is in full swing.

I do not know the final plan. My above post was based on what I had previously read/recalled on the current traffic in Meredith.

The single left turn lane still being used made me curious as to why it is only one lane, (I guess I had hoped they would be done for the season by this weekend) so I decided to revisit the DOT website (just now).

Normal traffic patterns will be resumed by June 9, 2018. The project will then be suspended for the summer months, resuming on September 4, 2018.

Sundays and holidays are the biggest problem.Southbound traffic is sometimes backed up as far as Moulton Farms. The lights go through a normal cycle with almost no traffic coming out of downtown Meredith or going south or east from Rt 3.That means that cars continue to pile up southbound while the other lanes have almost no traffic.
Hopefully, the crosswalk light will be synced to the southbound light which might be a big help.

This is an absolute mess. Because of the one left-turn lane still in place, it seems they have not placed the normal cones at the foot of Pleasant St. Cars are getting in the left where the cones used to be and turning left from Pleasant St is an experience. Traffic earlier today backed up well past the yacht club on Pleasant St with cars waiting to turn left. What improvement is this???

You are correct. I went through there twice in the last two days and the line to make the left both times was by hannaford. I can only imagine what July and August will be like if it doesn’t go back to the way it was. What a disaster.

I understand from a reliable source that the strategy is to keep the current alignment in place through the 4th of July to build frustration. An EZPass toll will then be put in place by the light that will ease congestion and improve traffic flow. But because it is much improved the thinking is that most if not all will be happy to pay the toll which will be $5.

I don't like where they moved the crosswalk to. It looks like they are going to put lights there, probably to eliminate having crossing guards on busy weekends.

Default Government thought process...

Couldn't have done this during the winter???

Nope. Not enough people would have seen their tax dollars at work.

However, what I see is my tax dollars spent on stupidity!

I used this new cross walk today. The crossing guard was very effective and helpful, though it does look like the crosswalk location is a candidate for a light; similar to the automated one that serves those crossing the street where the Irving is on Rt 25 just prior heading up the hill to Interlakes Regional.
Many families crossing back and forth at the time I passed through, making it seem as though a similar automated light would be helpful there when so many people are trying to cross the street for a variety of reasons. During the high season, it would be inconvenient in terms of slowing the flow of traffic, but in the off season, not so much.

I did read it but as it looks at the moment there will only be one left turn lane until the project is finished although I am hoping different.

Default Some improvement expected

I think the single central crosswalk will be helpful because the traffic through there has been stop and go at each crossing point, disrupting the flow as a couple people cross at each point. It doesn't take much longer for a group of 6 to cross all at once vs 2. This will keep the people in sync. The caveat is, will people go to the crosswalk or jaywalk?

As SAMIAM points out, it would be helpful to have the crosswalk somewhat synced with the traffic light.

I was happy to see that 25E coming from Hannafords will retain the two left turn lanes. I was anticipating worse backups than in the past with just one turn lane. Instead of a simple disastrous backup on some summer weekends, it would be a mega colossal disastrous backup. Whew!

At 10AM, it was already backed up about half a mile beyond the high school. Does anyone know to whom complaints should be directed?

Looks like only one turn lane to rt 3 off of 25 when done. Back-ups will be the norm. http://www.meredith3-25.com/Document...l_Option_A.pdf

I must be reading the rendering differently. According the the street marking the right lane heading west will be left, right and straight.

As others noted, two lanes can turn left, just as it was before. However turning right will have one lane where before there were two at the light which quickly merged to one. I wouldn't expect much problem for normal traffic but it might be a tight right turn for a truck.

I was thru there Monday and one lane was for left only other lane straight or right hand turn. This was clearly painted on the street. After you go through the lights there are still two lanes which merge into one. Maybe they changed since then and also the signage on the poles may show different.
Time to start going around. This will be a nightmare with one lane for left hand turn.

Laconia Daily Sun article here says "Work on the project will cease for the summer on June 8, ahead of Laconia Motorcycle Week activities, and will resume after Labor Day. Sperry said the road arrows and signs will go back up to resume the old traffic pattern for the summer."

Sperry is the New Hampshire Department of Transportation’s on-site contract administrator, and he should know what is going on.

The article also says about the southbound turn lanes "the final project will retain those lanes", as also indicated on the project map previously referenced.

They are still working this week and next and the rightmost lane will apparently be closed for work some of that time.

The engineering plans posted on the NHDOT project web site CLEARLY show that when the project is done, the two lanes currently allowing folks to turn left from Rt25 West to Rt 3 South will be retained as before...no change. This is from the official engineering plans on line. Stop worrying....!

I don't get what the state is doing.

Maybe someone who has been following this can explain this.

Yes, I see new curbstones. I can understand new pipes under road.

Why didn't the state schedule this for after Labor Day?

Who or what entity makes these decisions? Name names. Other then the "state".

As has already been explained, as of this Friday June 8th, construction will cease and all will be restored to the previous flow of traffic, including the option of turning left from both lanes coming to the light from Hannafords.

This information comes from Mr. Sperry, who is is the New Hampshire Department of Transportation’s on-site contract administrator AND from engineering plans available online.

The summer traffic pattern will be pretty much the same as last summer, except perhaps for the new crosswalk location.

AFTER Labor Day, construction will start again and, I assume, be completed before winter.

Once the construction is finished, the traffic pattern will not be much different than it was except for the crosswalk.

Why not do it all after Labor Day? Not enough time. So some was done in the spring and some after Labor Day.

I think this will be better and safer once complete. It looks like the new crosswalk will have lighting, with the previous set up it could be very difficult to see people in the crosswalks at night.

Am I understanding this correctly? All those months of work and a lot of money spent and nothing has changed except new curbs and a crosswalk.

Seems like there was quite a bit of work necessary on the bridge over the water that drains from Waukewan. They dug up and replaced all the surface down to the support structure. Not sure what necessitated that. Also work on 25 in front of the bank. Drains?

Except for the crosswalk, this doesn't seem to have been meant to be a "fix" for traffic issues. Mostly repairs to existing road/bridge/drainage systems.

Does anyone know what's going on with the old hardware store building? It's starting to look pretty bad and should be torn down.

As it was explained to me :: The Old Hardware building and parking lot was bought by Rusty and the powers to be. A Three story building will be constructed there. 1st Floor will be retail shops.... 2nd floor will be offices... 3rd floor will be Condo's. I have heard this from a couple of people, So take it with a grain of salt.
