Rainy fall day activities???
Looking for ideas to keep a group of active, fun, 60 going on 50 year old ladies from Florida busy during the next week of rainy days. Staying in Meredith, but plan on wandering around the lake by car. Attitash slide is now out, playing pool at Common Man-Ashland is in. Drinks at Akwa is now out (closed early and weather), drinks at most anywhere has always been in. Appreciate any input. tx

My favorites
A cruise on the Mount Washington is ALWAYS a great day, regardless of weather. Great opportunity to walk around, mi/mingle, etc.
How can you avoid Funspot? Something for all ages, not just kids. Go early while the kids are in school, though. Next door is Winnipesaukee Museum. Check first for hours. Farther away is the Libby Museum and the NH Boat Museum and the Wright Museum, if you're driving around the lake. And Castle in the Clouds. Obviously check for fall hours. Are there any "party Craft" stores around, where you all get to make or paint something to take home? It's warm, so light occasional drizzle shouldn't stop many outdoor activities, and later, you can brag that "We did it in the rain". State Parks are free or cheap and you can usually find a covered pavilion for an outdoor picnic. Echo Lake in Conway. If it's too wet, you can do all that tax free shopping. "Echo Lake State Park is a great place to take the family for a swim and picnic. A scenic trail around the lake provides great views of sheer, 700-foot Cathedral Ledge which towers over the lake. A mile-long auto road and hiking trails lead to the top of Cathedral Ledge where views across the Saco River Valley to the White Mountains can be enjoyed. Both Cathedral and nearby White Horse ledges are popular rock and ice climbing walls." Your best fun is probably each other, and the activity will be secondary. Try the "events" page on www.visitNH.com. |

rainy day
if you are on bear you can enjoy gassing up the generator while nh electric wends its way out to make repairs--this time a couple of days. meanwhile you can stare at a blank tv and wonder what the sox are doing this evening

We got a burn permit, went over to Welch and burned a lot of brush. Then had a glass of wine (or 2) and roasted marshmallows on the hot embers.

Castle in the Clouds
We recently spent the day at Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, and it was beautiful! Of course, a sunny day is better if you're planning to do the horseback riding, or walk the trails, but if it's only sprinkling, walking in the woods is doable. The mansion tour, carriage house, and trolley service make it definitely workable in the rain. I'd bet that crowds would be lessened, too.

Moultonborough
Both the Moultonborough Country Store and the Loon Center are good rainy day stops.

At the Winnipesaukee Playhouse we have our Education Department production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a musical comedy. Really talented local performers and a wickedly funny script. Plus audience participation (by invitation, nobody will be called up if they don't want to be!) makes every performance different!

Do you happen to know how extensive this outage was? Was all of Bear Island out?
