Ragged Island
My wife and I are thinking about taking the ski out to Ragged for a few hours this afternoon or tomorrow. I believe there's some docking available on the southeast side. Is this a good configuration for jet skis?
If we choose to anchor, any recommendations on east or west sides? I'm guessing east to avoid exposure to wind but I'm uncertain about ease of navigation given I understand there are a lot of underwater rocks around the island. |

With the skis, I wouldn't bother with the docking—go to the east side just beyond the small island and pull right up to the beach. The water is clear enough to see the rocks you'll have to navigate.
The west side is fine but, as you mentioned, is more exposed—it's fun to ride the rollers there, though, so as long as you've got a solid anchor (like the Mantus dinghy anchor), you'll be fine. No stern anchor necessary as the wave action keeps it angled toward shore. In terms of activity: if you're looking to stand in the water sandbar style or walk the island, east side. If you actually want to swim, west side. Sent from my SM-G990U1 using Tapatalk |

Just got back from Ragged Island. Great trip on a relatively calm day with limited traffic and little wind. We stuck to the east side, slowly weaving our way around potential bottom scrapers to a great spot. Brought sneakers to walk the trail but never got to that. We were quite content swimming out and exploring the rocks around the smaller island just off the beach. We'll be back; not sure why it took us so long to get there.

Unfortunately, I didn’t see it till after we got back. But it was pretty obvious. Just had to look for the other boats that were there before us.

I swam/walked my boat in on the east side last time there, didn't take the chance of being under power. Trail is nice, worth the short walk. Fun place to visit. I can see where it was easy to get in on skis.

Docks at Ragged
Limited spaces available and rock navigation needed to get in with a boat. A jet shouldn't have much trouble. I think there's also a docking time limit. If anyone finds my Ray Ban Aviators on the West side let me know.

Ragged Island Land Marks on West Side
Interested to learn it there are any landmarks on the west side which may make pulling in easier while on the lookout for rocks 😃

Once you do, go straight in and you're good. That side—west—is much less rocky. In fact, other than the big rock towards the top (north) and pretty close to shore, there's not much. Still be careful, of course! Sent from my SM-G990U1 using Tapatalk |

I've only accessed the public docks on the West side. This markup is how I went in. Shallow rocks on left as map shows and other deeper ones around the track I drew. Keep prop up a bit and you shouldn't have any problem.

I found it to be a trade-off on which side to access. West side is deep and safe, but more exposed so on a windy day anchoring and accessing shore is harder. East side so rocky I got out of the boat and floated it in with engine off, but calm and shallow so just wade to shore.

Bob, you are saying west, but do you mean east?

Ragged Island history
Is anyone on this thread familiar with an old family residing on Ragged Island 60 plus years ago by the name of Wheeler Beckett? Thanks.

Thank you so much for the links! This explains a connection to my great grandfather who used to boat there to visit him.
