NH Sunday News winter sports supplement!

Today's NH Sunday News has a "Winter World 2007" supplement titled "Your guide to winter fun across the Granite State"

Within that supplement are two excellent articles devoted to snowmobiling. The first article is authored by New Hampshire Snow Slickers trail adminstrator Art Charland. It gives an interesting overview of the evolution of the sport with particular emphasis on the Snow Slickers' trail system.

The second article is penned by an in-house author and covers the annual snowmobile safety clases.

For you folks in the Ossipee/Tamworth area there is also an in-depth article about the upcoming New England Sled Dog Club races being held in and around Chocorua Lake in January.

There is also nearly a full page of ads for Pittsburg area businesses.

For you non-mechanized sports lovers,there is the obligatory downhill sports categories....

The supplement alone is worth a trip to the local news stand this morning.

While this is not about snowmobiling, it may be of interest.

Waterville Valley got about 3" of snow on Friday night, and everything looks like winter. The ski area opened on Saturday, up on top, at high country.

Right now, there's a long line of snow guns at work as they work to get top to bottom skiing open for Thanksgiving. It's been a long time since that happened!

Prices of threedom passes are much more expensive, this year. Supposedly, this was triggered by the sale of Sunday River in Maine, or something. Raising prices for ski area tickets is almost like raising prices for gallon-gasoline...easily touched off.

Hey....there's always free snowsnowing and cross country skiing on the packed out trails created by/for snowmobiles.

The gates just got closed on the Tripoli Rd. Rt 93-exit 31-Tripoli Rd- easy to find and access. From the north end (actually west end) to the height of land gate, about 7 miles, it's a snowmobile trail within the WMNF with a number of side trails. Is it groomed? ...don't know?,

and how functional they are for heavenly viewing.

wn of WV has built maybe three miles of sidewalks in the last few years, and now with these low light lights, it's almost like walking in the dark. Lots of people use them at night to walk the dog, get out of the house, etc, and it's like you don 't see the other people now until they are very close.

Likewise, it is a very real possibility to cross paths with a large moose or a big hungry bear as they tiptoe through the valley on their nightly food raids. So, now one never nows what/who with whom/it you will cross paths.

The low light street lamps are more like 'creating an atmosphere of non-light' than illuminaton. No more hiding in the shadows!

Just turned to the Union Leader, and guess what, there's a story about the WV lights.......small world here in NH.

It is snowing here in Joisey! I walked out to pick up the newspaper on the driveway this morning and had to shake the snow off of it. The grass on the side of the road was white... Let the winter festivities begin!

otos....good quality....sunshine and snow covering the mountain at Bretton Woods......whoops.....what mountain?....where's the mounain at Bretton Woods?......no, that ain't no mountain......it's a lot more like JUST A HILL, but not a mountain.

Hey, where o where is the mountain at Bretton Wood......NOWHERE...because it's just a hill!

At Waterville, the ski mountain is 4002' high! How high at Bretton Woods? ...not too easy to find that out as they try to keep the height of their shorty mountain...aka .....a hill...a secret....maybe they will build a tower of condos on top or something to increase its' height.

Here you go FLL.3100 ft top elevation and 1500 ft of vertical.Heck,this chart says WV has only 1000ft of vert.I know that is wrong as WV is 2000.While I agree it is a tame Mt,it does have something Wallyworld can not claim,the biggest ski area in NH.Heck WV is 200 ft lower than my favorite Cannon!

No doubt, there's a reason why Bretton Woods is now the most popular NH ski area, and Waterville Valley has gone from #1 to about #5 in the last 20 years. Could be the view....Bretton Woods has some of the best views, along with Cannon and Wildcat.
