No Fried Clams @ Pops these days.
Today we went to Pops and were surprised to find out that they are not carrying Clams at all these days.
They had a big sign stating they were not carrying Clams right now. My guess is because of Red Tide and supply issues. They didn't know when they would start carrying them again. Disappointing for sure. Went with scallops instead, but not nearly as tasty as the clams. If you really want Fried Clams please contact them ahead of time so they can advise you of actual availability. |

We just had some last week...spectacular, they were!

There was a sewer pipe that broke in the Ipswich/Essex area that caused closure of the clam flats. Two have been reopened.
Oops please disregard...this was a article from 2016. |

No Diggers No Clams
Maine produces more clams than any other, and state regulators there say clam harvesters collected a little more than 1.4 million pounds last year. That’s the lowest total since 1930, and less than half a typical haul in the early- and mid-1980s.
The number of harvesters digging for them in Maine has slipped to about 1,600 in Maine. It was more than 2,000 as recently as 2015. Maine’s diminished harvest is partially caused by clamming closures necessitated by algal blooms that render them unsafe to eat. |

The very few that are available are around $140 per gallon of shucked clams
My suppliers says that next week there will probably be none. |

We were over at Pop's yesterday for clams and scallops. There seems to be a disconnect between the back, the window, and that funny thing out front, I think it's a menu board. The person in the back knew they were out, the thoughtful person at the window knew as well, but that pesky board that tells you what you can order said I could have anything I wanted. We ordered and the girls at the window said no clams, but they for some reason couldn't be bothered to come around that darn window and put some tape over what was out. They were also out of lemonade and sprite. Again, that darn board had no idea what was going on. For the amount of time wasted telling everyone what you're out of all day, someone managing should have let them know to just put a little tape over the items that were out until they were in, or use a marker and write 'out'.
All this said, we went out there just for the clams and plan to do so again because they're the best around, just might want to fire that board and hire a new one who does the job right. |

Cannot decent clams be acquired by Pops from a location other than Maine?

I was in Ipswich last week and their sign at the “Clam Box” said add $5.00 to any clam order due to supply. So a clam plate was already like $26 turning it into a $31 plate! No thanks!!

Yesterday, a friend had great Ipswich fried clams at...
The Woodhouse, in San Francisco. $22 for whole belly. How'd they get 'em?

We have clams
We were temporarily out of whole clams. I believe we were waiting on a delivery that was running late. We always have first dibs with my suppliers as we go through a high volume of frying clams. Supply is short right now with high demand. That correlates to high prices $195 a gallon. Most people do not realize that almost all of Massachusetts and Maine was shut down for harvesting. This was due to red tide which is caused by excessive rain and warm temps. Canada is open. As far as someone in SanFransisco getting clams,I would assume they came from Washington state.

Yup...
San Francisco has been getting a lot of rejected "clams" from the east for decades. Keep 'em coming and I'll move back east.
