Ellacoya Barn and Grille announces, "We are very blessed and fortunate to be opening a second restaurant in the Lakes Region….STAY TUNED!! Because of your support through all of the years, we are able to expand to a location with lake views & boat access~thank you!!" Anyone have the insider's track as to where the new location might be?

If I was a betting person, I'd say it may be nearby, like a restaurant that recently closed with lake views and boat access.

I believe it's been discussed that the former Lyons Den was purchased by the owners of Ellaycoya

Going into former Lyon's Den location but the owner of Ellacoya did not buy the building. Just running the operation.

Just stopped by. A wonderful change for those who seek a bar experience.
Ken (owner/manager from Elilacoya) plans on waiting to see if anyone asks for Dancing Rabbit Vodka before he brings it in. Please help me out😊 |

Myself along with our party of 8 tried The Breeze Sat night. The interior has changed quite a bit, and has a nice modern feel. A large bar has been built in front of the main windows overlooking the lake, this makes for a great view of those sitting there. It was very busy and quite loud.
Service was great and the food was good. Very seafood intensive menu, but there are also some other items including duck, steak tips and a chicken dish. We tried the Duck Confit app and for entrées we tried the Seafood Saffron, Seafood Sauté, Chicken Prosciutto, and Steak Tips. All were delicious. We will be back! |

Yes, this is what I was referencing when I stated more of a bar scene. The bar is now between the tables and the windows so if you are seated at a table your view is now the back of a chair. The view from the bar is great though.

The window seats you may have enjoyed previously for nice family meal or date night in the left hand corner of the restaurant are now occupied by the bar. We had a window table, but our view was of the marine patrol building. There may be some nice views from tables in the room to the right though. It was quite loud, we all mentioned it. The ladies thought this may be a good thing because a party of 8 can tend to get a bid noisy regardless ![]() |

We went last Friday. Food was quite good. I had blackened Mahi Mahi and it was great. The staff is still learning and they are still finishing off the space. As has been stated it gets very loud in there. My understanding is they have ordered something (not sure what) to deaden sound. I also hear that the new furniture is still on order.
The bar does largely block the windows in the larger room. The former bar area now has tables however and I think there would be a clear view of the lake from those tables. My opinion is there will be growing pains as the new staff learns and as they finish off the space. Be patient and give them time to do that. |

I would think those window/ bar seats would provide an awesome entertainment value watching the shenanigans of boat launching and loading at the docks...well worth the price of admission and booze!

It's still the same size building so same number of people. Why do you think it is loud now when it usually wasn't before?
We've been customers for decades, Dot's, then Gretchen's and then Lyons Den. Always a friendly family place. We'll try it, but if it's just a loud bar, we'll probably be lost business. That was the problem with Junior's Crush. Good enough food and service, but just a loud bar. Didn't last long. |

Thanks for all the reports!
We're really looking forward to The Breeze! This location was our go to Friday night venue, and I hope it will continue! I certainly hope they can use some sound treatments to help with noise environment! This was a big problem for the bar at the Lion's Den. The lack of sound treatment along with close solid hard (sound reflecting) ceilings caused it to be much too loud with a crowd. Someone starts talking, then it gets too loud with the crowd, so everyone must talk louder... then louder... then louder still! Pretty soon you can barely hear what is being said without talking very loudly, and it was a small space which didn't help. At least the dining room was much quieter. Some good sound treatments on the walls and perhaps ceilings can help a lot. They are not overly expensive, and many can look good also! There's another place that I frequent that also badly needs sound/noise/acoustic treatments. They often have live music and it's such a bad acoustic environment that I often can't stay long if the music starts. I'm sure they lose a lot of customers because of these issues. Not that The Breeze has music, but the acoustic environment can make a place enjoyable, or annoying if it's bad! I was hoping with the reconfiguring of The Breeze, they would take the noise environment into consideration. Either way, we're still looking forward to it!

We ate at The Breeze Friday night with a group of 18. The food and service were both great.
I was surprised, as others have said, that so much construction work has been done. It has a very different feel to the way the Lion's Den was. The window view is really blocked by the new bar. With the old layout many diners, not just those seated in front of the windows, could still see outside. Now, really just the bar patrons can see out and those closest to the windows have their backs facing them. It felt smaller inside because the main dining room was made smaller with the construction of the new bar. But, it was a positive experience and we will go back. |

We stopped in for lunch today, our 1st visit. The new layout is fine for us, we sat at the bar with a good view. The old bar area had 5 tables setup, could have been 6 in there. A group of ladies came in and a long table was setup in that area. There are sliding doors that can be closed to accommodate a private party in that area. By the time that we left, the area to the right of the new bar plus the old bar area was filled, with mostly ladies out for lunch. Pretty much the clientele that used to lunch in the main dining area. In all I counted 14 dining tables with ample space between tables. The new bar and the tables in the main dining area were mostly filled by 12:30.
Our lunch was just OK at best. First, there was no draft beer. Zero. The taps are not yet operational. There was an OK selection of bottled and canned beer but that is just not the same. I had the Duck Confit sandwich which was rather bland and skimpy. The fries were classic Ellacoya fare, limp. My wife had the Bao Vegetarian sandwich. She, a light eater, described it as tasty but skimpy of filling. Looking at the menu back home, there was supposed to have been apple slaw but there were just the limp fries with the sandwiches. The old bar area used to be a regular lunch spot, often on our way back out to Welch. So, we will try the Breeze again, just not right away. Alan |

How was the sound level? The new decor with lots of wood reminds me of Johnson's. Nothing to absorb the sound. I was disappointed to see the bar in front of the windows. We used to love reserving the corner table by the window for special occasions. |

We all have to remember that before COVID there was a staffing issue for restaurants. COVID made it worst. For some the solution was to turn to SYSCO as the prep cook. Therefore, in many cases things like hand cut fries may be an offering of the past. |

The limp fries at Ellacoya have been advertised as hand cut and had been served long before Covid and staff shortages. That was my main complaint: although the $5 hamburgers, now $8, on Mondays were great bargains, the fries were always soggy. I always enjoyed the fish and chips at the Lyon's Den. Sysco wasn't the problem.

I will miss the old bar area with the sliding doors open in the summer. Perfect 'Keys' atmosphere and the barmaid Margaux was wonderful experience. The noise was contained in the bar area so we can enjoy our dining experience in a quiet area with a wonderful lake view. I'm not happy with the new setup. It is now too noisy in the big room! Gretchen, the original owner, with decades of experience in the upscale food industry did her homework and did the right thing. In fact, she had another bar to the right of the front door for those who are waiting for their table. A huge win!
It is just another Ellacoya Grill. The public wants variety.

I’m certain I have a little different take on the changing of the bar location. When it was a lions den I would occasionally hop off my mower and head over for a beer and a bite. I was never concerned about my appearance because the bar was separated from the dining room. To me it kinda felt like a local working man’s bar I don’t think I’d be comfortable heading over there in a sweaty T-shirt to sit at the bar now. Perhaps my newfound reluctance is better for other guests. |

I also liked the old bar and the Den menu. However;
The Breeze has been filling up every day. In general business has been great for a new start. The new owners are in this to make a profit and so far it is on track. The bar is where the money is so they gave it the best seats in the house. So while I liked the old, the new is what it is and I wish them well. We will give it another try in a while. Alan |

The successors also didn't put in the hours like Wally & Jeanne. The Damons lived at Sandy Point all season, so Jeanne would be there for early morning deliveries and dinner prep would begin before the lunch hour. Their cottage was next to ours, and most nights it was 11 pm before they called it a night. Many times we saw their successors show up after 3 pm to open for dinner. The bread/roll deliveries would be waiting for them outside the kitchen door. You can't expect success with no effort. We all miss the old Sandy Point Restaurant as well as the William Tell, another long successful establishment.

We always loved Ellacoya's fries. They are hand cut and fired to order, which makes them different and more flavorful than the typical frozen ones you get everywhere else.
Are they the crispiest? no, but they taste great! Look forward to trying the Breeze once we get up there next. |

a group of us would go to Sandy Point every August by boat for the baked stuff lobster. We went twice with new owners and it wasn't good so never went back

We stopped in yesterday (Sunday May 1) for lunch at 12:15. The place was nearly empty. First thing we noticed after that was the loud music. The carpet was gone, replaced by what looked like laminate flooring. Laminate always seems to echo more than real wood, and that may have contributed to the noise level. It was carpeted before. We sat by the window in the old bar section. Our waitress brought menus and water but did not ask if we wanted drinks. We asked if the music could be turned down. "I don't know " was the response, and she left. Nothing happened and we didn't see her again. We reviewed the menu which was unappealing and we left.

Live entertainment is different as I feel that's the experience the venue is purposefully creating. But in most cases, I feel, people want to enjoy a comfortable conversation with the company they're with. That's often hard to do and it doesn't get any easier for many as they age. Am I out of touch? Maybe I should get with the program and simply text my pals on the other side of the table. When we walk into a restaurant and it's clear the music is too loud, we'll ask if there's a quieter section. If there isn't, then we're outta there. |

First... they destroyed the view of the lake, by placing the bar in front of the main window, bad idea 1
Prices are high, even for lunch. Menu has nothing the average diner would order! Music was loud, and that was at lunchtime. We had a party of 6, and everyone, felt the same as above. Average food, and most was not hot, but we were not going to send back to kitchen, as we waited a long tine already to get served. On a good note we had an excellent waiter ! I expect the tourists, and summer crowd will flock there, but not sure the locals will be drawn in to eat, because of the pricing and menu options. Still a good choice for a 'special occasion'. The bar crowd will always be there, you can count on that...... I wish the owners and management success, but hope they hear feedback from the customers for improvements. "Still a good choice for a 'special occasion'.
The bar crowd will always be there, you can count on that......" Those seem to be conflicting statements. |
