First Tunnel-Hull+Surface-Piercing Prop—Year?
I spent many hours during HS class designing such a boat—not knowing that someone was way ahead of me.
This one just sold for many thousand$. What year was this boat introduced? Hint: It was before the war. |

Interesting that they used a regular prop and just mounted it with a really high X dimension. was expecting something more exotic. That thing must be horrendous at low speeds, especially while backing. Great boat though.

That's a Hickman Sea Sled, I believe the first of the designs were in the early 1920's. The boat in the picture appears to be somewhat later, probably 1930's.
It's rumored that Dick Fisher of Boston Whaler fame wanted to build the first 13 footer as a sea sled design. He ended up altering the bottom design somewhat due to the being unable to to negotiate a licensing agreement with Hickman. If you look at one of the older classic 13's from the front, you can see the influence.

Just 40 Years Behind This Design--Wasted My Civics-Time and Bad Grade...
I wrote that it was designed "before the war".
What I didn't mention, was which war. This tunnel hull, surface-piercing-prop boat was designed in 1913! (And sold for $71,000). I urge caution when bidding at the site. I "won" a bid at BaT auction house, after citing one small condition (a delivery of three hours). After the auction, the seller then refused. So I drove to the seller, and found it had been misleadingly advertised. I refused to buy it, and lost my four-figure deposit (to BaT) in the process. But I'm not looking back. Interesting items keep showing up so I check every day's auction. I thought I'd share yesterday's comment regarding a very desirable car from the 1950s: Quote:

In 1995, Donzi produced an anniversary edition of its Classic 22 w/surface-piercing drive.
The theory to driving these screaming mee-mees was to push the throttle forward and slowly raise the stabilizers, bringing the hull out of the water and creating incredible speed (and chine-walking!). Only drove one once- it was enough! |
