Default Social Security vs Social Security Disability Income

I have a family friend who is 80 yrs old and on Social Security income.
Person happens to be in the hospital now.

Can this person change their status to collect 'Social Security Disability Income', this would give that person additional monies, and I believe 'tax free'.

Thoughts if this is possible?

I don't believe you can but I'm not positive. I had a friend that was on SS disability and when he became 65 he was switched over to regular SS but his benifit stayed the same

Default ServiceLink

Call Servicelink. They can tell you the procedure to claim SSDI. Normally the hospital staff can tell you, but Servicelink will help you.
Signing up is not complicated but the process SSA goes through is. You may need a lawyer. If you win the lawyer will be compensated by SSA. Seen this a number of times.

Default Agree

I agree with the above. A friend went on SSDI, but he hired a lawyer and the process took two years before a judge ruled. He then received retroactive benefits. When he turned 65 SS automatically rolled him over from SSDI to SS. Exact same monthly payment. This was some years ago, so things could have changed.

Unfortunately the answer is no. Once you reach retirement age the SSDI changes to SSI because in their eyes you reached retirement age and disability is paid out based on the fact you would be working but can’t due to a physical or mental condition
