Default Tunnels in mud?

Does anyone know what makes these tunnels? I have never seen anything in them and only see them below the thermocline where the water stays around 50f or below all year. I was thinking they are made by cusk? http://www.winnipesaukee.com/photopo...1&ppuser=16983

I've seen these a lot, too. I've never really inspected any of them because I wasn't sure if anything was living in them :P

Interesting, didn't think of this. I'm still not sticking my hand in one to find out.
