Winnipesaukee Fanfold Postcards from 1912

While my wife & I were in Chicago visiting my son (and his family) for Thanksgiving earlier this week we happened to stop by a collectibles store where we found the following fanfold postcard packet while browsing/killing time. The package of postcards was mailed in 1912 (a hundred years ago!) from a camper at Camp Idelwild on Cow Island (in existence 1892 - 1975) to a friend in Ohio. All of the postcards (and envelope) are in excellent condition. I don't typically purchase postcards so I don't know how unusual this "find" is but for $2.00 I figured that I'd splurge. I thought that some of you might be interested in seeing them!

1) This Spring, I spent $8 for a 95-year-old postcard from eBay.

'Course, I didn't have much choice in the matter: the postcard was from a summer camp—and the writer was my Grand-Aunt. She described the weather—that the water was too cold for her, and that my Dad was "a wonderful baby".

My Dad got a big chuckle out that one!

2) Curious if PhotoPost has "collected" any of these postcards, I selected one—the large and "roundish" island—and got as far as page 16 (of 32) before the images started blurring together .

'Not sure how to enter these in PhotoPost anyway. Wouldn't they appear fuzzy if selected as a screenshot?

Over 1300 postcards have been scanned and placed on the Winnipesaukee.com Photopost. If you are signed in, Photopost has a wonderful search function where you can search by poster, subject, title or category and it works pretty "good"!! rgilfert has a find here because the price was so reasonable but it is the really rare postcards that fetch a high price on e-bay or at postcard shows. I've posted a few of the postcards from this fanfold booklet here in this thread just to see if I could find them with the search function. Most of these cards are already on-line here on Photopost.

This is the most amusing postcard booklet cover I have seen because of course the native Indians were riding through the Belknaps during the same time that the original Mount was plying the waters of the lake....right?

The image of the Indian appears to be the same statue (Appeal to the Great Spirit by Cyrus Dallin) that is in front of the Boston MFA. Which makes me wonder if the image on the postcard is just an artist's rendtion or was there a copy of the statue there at one time. Does anyone know? Below is an image of the statue at the MFA in Boston.

When I saw this post, I thought that I also had this same postcard booklet but had to wait until we went to the cottage again to look. Yes, it is the same one, mailed (postmarked) 1916. I picked this up 5-6 years ago but honestly can't remember if it was online or at a local flea market. Anyway, I think it's a great old souvenir of Lake Winnipesaukee!

Now, did anyone else notice the spelling of the lake on this booklet? It is spelled winnEpesaukee instead of winnIpesaukee which was a common old spelling for the lake.

I hadn't given it much thought, but it appears from this interesting website that New England's native Indians had little use for horses:
