I actually had to go back out tonight...in the midst of the chaos of wet vac and compressor noise yesterday, one of the cats decided it would be a good idea to hide and not come out. After an hour of hunting for it, I had to head home. I came in tonight and was able to grab him!

Oh no! Glad you found the cat. I think that was an omen. You just aren't supposed to leave.

Do you have gps and radar to navigate in the dark? I still rely on my Raymarine C70.

I do have navionics, and I picked up a used radar system I want to install in my short off season. The lake is very dark this time of year!

I think most of the Gilford islanders make the trip back and forth to the mainland so often, there really isn't much navigation. Mostly, look at the land masses and the three red airport towers can be seen for miles. Mostly, keep your eyes out of the cockpit looking for other boats. Fog, of course is a different story. Electronic assistance might be nice, but we just never got around to it. Maybe next year, Navionics.

Some nights are so dark I can't see land masses...but you're right, once I'm around Mink, I can see the towers and Glendale....much easier with the flashing navigation lights, but those go away in October.

I was coming in one foggy morning and thought I saw the Marine Patrol building lights...turned out to be a fishing boat with spotlights mounted on the roof!

So Steve, when will you be back on Mark for the 2021 season? 20 minutes after ice out?

This year was 2 or 3 days before ice out...whenever it's clear between Glendale and Mark!

I would love an ice boat! Forum friend "Codeman" had a 1000 islands ice boat about 10 or 12 years ago that I remember. To me that was the perfect ice boat for the lake. Unfortunately the price on these over the past few years has skyrocketed!!

Maybe someday!...

Honestly I have lost count! Far more than Steve's underwear changes. We were neighbors ya know!

I spoke with the new owners of 1000 Islands a year or so ago about a new boat. The 18' was about $100k, a far cry from the mid $50k's I paid new years ago for the yellow one. They have certainly refined them though. They offered to have me be their rep in the northeast and sell me a boat to show at a discounted rate. Timing wasn't right, but I am getting tempted to re-engage the conversation. I have been looking for a used one and they are non-existent out there. Any ads found online are old ads for boats that are long gone.

When you do finally buy one, make sure it's fully enclosed with a stove/heater.

Every air boat or hovercraft I've ever seen all have the same problem in common. They are extremely loud because they have non-muffled exhaust pipes. Plus, it is possible to flip it over, upside down, when crossing from ice to open water, or open water to ice, if you are not careful.

For about $40 at www.swap.com, an internet thrift store located somewhere unknown, you can get a good pair of winter walking boots, and get better benefits than what you get with a many thousand dollar air boat or hovercraft. Something like a pair of Timberland, shoes/boots made in Maine, size 11-wide, reg-$119, swapped out at $40 ...... with just a tiny amount of wear on the edge of the soles, you know ..... such a deal!

You know that Moultonborough Fire Dept just sits around all year, all 12-months long, eating fire house, home-made meatballs, and fire house chicken parmigiana a-waiting for someone on a snowmobile or atv or something to break through the ice so's they can zoom out there on their ice boat to probably retrieve a frozen and deceased non-survivor before it sinks into the icy cold depths.

These exotic ice travel boats are best left to the local fire dept, that get's one donated in memory of someone who drowned while driving a snowmobile across the ice. When the fire dept goes out on an ice boat run, they wear a dry suit, pfd, and a helmet.

As Walter Cronkite used to say ....... and, that's the way it is! .... ... blah-blah-blah!

You had a great season Steve! Congrats!

My last trip to the island was last weekend. I have no complaints as we started the season on March 26th! 8 1/2 months is a dam fine season!

See ya next year!

We were hoping to go another week or two, but since we had to break ice in the Weirs channel to get out this morning we are going to call it a season.

I am sure if we moved over there we could buy a bit more time, but its probably time to call it. I can imagine the launch ramp is a mess over there.

Default Glendale

I launched once in Glendale after Christmas by backing the trailer onto the ice. As the ice sank, it broke up and we were off. Stayed overnight. The lake was open, but thin ice in Glendale. We made a few circles in the bay, the wake broke up the ice and we retrieved without incident.

Trim tabs are great when navigating choppy water in a C Dory. You will be glad you got em.

I'm sure I will...will help level the ride as well as all the weight ( batteries, galley cabinetry, and ME ) are on the starboard side!

Keeping the port side fresh water tank full helped a little, but winterized that in October

Trim tabs should be standard equipment on any planing-hull boat. I think you will love them. Don't be afraid to put them down (carefully) at speed. I was convinced for years that they were just for leveling the ride and lowering the planing speed and then I discovered how they also smoothed the ride in chop at higher speeds. Suddenly bumpy days that were limited to 18 MPH became fun, 35 MPH days.

The only way the C-Nile's gonna do 35 is with a tail wind and a jet pack! ;-)

It's all relative. My current boat tops out at only 25 knots, but trim tabs still help smooth the ride at speed.

Got the C-Nile out of the shop today...new trim tabs and a roof mounted horn set up...it's pretty loud. Now, if the mail boat doesn't sound it's horn when my grandson waves from shore, I can give him a blast when I pull in! C'mon spring!!

My previous horn was one of those push button air can horns. They don't work very well in the freezing temperatures I travel in...kinda sounded like a COPD patient exhaling...

Was I supposed to take pics?? Let's just say that I did try it and I'm pretty sure it's louder than yours...must be the larger reflective area of the C-Dory roof!

Default Pics? or Toots?

I don't think we need pix. Play us a tune and post the youtube link. I guess the video would be visual too, so two birds with one toot. Maybe you'll have to re-christen C-Nile to "Tooters"? Boats can be fun in so many ways.

There's sort of an assumption about freezing because it was discovered in the spring. Most likely, yes.
Three years ago, mid-July, my nephew said he heard a water spraying noise, Turned out a copper pipe, under a set of steps had split. No reason, just old pipe. Lift a board, cut the pipe, (or island gremlins), solder in a coupling. No big deal. I know what plumbing and electrical supplies my neighbor has, and vice versa. Also where the keys are. On an island, thee's a lot of DIY reliance.

Oh stop! Well, it is, but so are both batteries, and the one full fuel tank. She'll level out some when I fill the fresh water tank and other fuel tank...both on the port side. AND, when I get through some of that wine stash!

Was thinking last night's ride home was gonna be a washout. After loading the boat in the rain, I headed out just in time to enjoy clearing skies and a pretty nice sunset!Name: 20210526_195820.jpeg

I came in around 6pm with storm right behind me. Dropped everyone at Glendale and as soon as I got into Smith Cove the wind started to howl. About 1 minute before backing into my slip it started dumping rain. I don't think I have ever gotten so soaked in my life!

Before the Dory, I had many rides like that. I used to tell people that I could have walked through a car wash and not get as wet!

I love living vicariously through your pictures! Hopefully once the RE market settles down and island places become reasonable again I can contribute my own some day!

Have fun out there and enjoy!

True story...I had posted a picture of the lake with not another boat in sight on a " i boat on winni" page and jokingly made a comment about feeling lonely. Somebody commented " oh, you're not alone...everytime you go by us , we yell out C-Nile, and the dog barks! Made me laugh! Yesterday afternoon, i had to do some shopping in town, and my wife ( who generally never leaves the island) came along. Pulling out of Glendale on the way back, I boated past Belknap Point. There were 6 or 8 people standing on a dock and they all started waving, so I blew the horn at them. My wife, who is never on the boat, said " what was that all about?" I said with a straight face " oh, it's like people who yell " mount" when the Mt. Washington goes by...they wave, yell out C-Nile, and all their dogs bark!" She thinks the boat is aptly named....

The view from the back of the C-Nile yesterday was nothing to write home about...propane trip. For some reason, we couldn't get the propane company to bring the barge out all of last year, so if you're listening Kevin, the big tank is still empty!
Here's a plug for Osborne's Agway...not only are they very nice, but they stocked plant fertilizers my wife needed that even Lowes didn't stock, and they fill 100 pound propane tanks for 59.99! Cheapest price I've found!!Name: 20210612_180753.jpeg

Probably not a good time for cigars .......

I agree on Osborne's Agway, always pleasant stores to be in and they carry more items than people might realize.

So I finally saw another C-Dory on the lake...was sitting on my deck after work yesterday and it came by the house. Looked to be a 22 with a roof mounted a/c unit. Anyone know who this is??

Yeah A/C might be good in your cabin in the summah. Maybe a reversible heat pump for March, April, Oct and Nov?

I suppose the a/c would be nice, but for me heat is all I need. I installed an overhead 12v fan, and so far with the windows and door open it's been fine. Having to commute through November and even into early December though, the heater has made a huge difference. People think the ice scraper I leave on the dashboard is a joke...not so much!
