Default Questions about the Lakes Region

We're having a custom chart of the lake made to hang in our house. The designer had a template of Lake Winnipesaukee and asked us if we wanted to make any changes. There were some things on the map that we weren't familiar with. So, could you let me know what information is and is not correct? All input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is it Lake Wickwas or Wickwas Lake?

Is it Lake Winnisquam or Winnisquam Lake?

Is it Lake Eileen or Eileen Lake?

Is there an island called Red Head Island near Sleepers Island?

Are the following places located on the lake?

Hornet's Nest Point, Farrar Point, Salman Meadow Cove (I question the spelling on this one as well), Carr Point, Blaisdell Point, Colman Point (sp?),
Rum Point, Black Point, Pipers Point

And finally, does the large island in the center of Lake Wentworth have a name?

Thanks for all of your help!

Default Stamp Act Island

I believe the island in the middle of lake Wentworth is named Stamp Act Island.

Rum Point is on the lake in West Alton a little south of Minge Cove. Black Point is in East Alton across the top of Alton Bay from Rum.

Lake Wicwas is correct, although there may be other spellings in common use. See: www.lakewicwas.org.

Googling on Winnisquam, I see ample number of references with "Lake" before and after the name.

This map, from 1891, shows "Red Hand" island east of Sleepers. Bizer's site (http://www.bizer.com/winislan.htm) says the island now is Treasure Island, with (AKA Redhead). That old map is on one post on this old thread, which also discusses Red Hand vs Redhead: http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/...ead.php?t=1650

I'll leave the "points" to others.

Mt. Belknap from Lake Eileen (or is it Belknap Mountain?)http://www.winnipesaukee.com/photopo...hp?photo=15580

I'm pretty sure that the plaque over at the Boy Scout Camp calls it Lake Eileen. Lake Eileen is located totally within the Hidden Valley Scout Reservation in Gilmanton Iron Works. Older maps refer to it as Lower Round Pond with Upper Round Pond being located high in the Belknap Mountains in Gilford. Upper Round Pond is noted to be the headwaters of the Suncook River. The whole area is public recreation land and is open for passive recreation. The camp can be located from Places Mill Rd. near the Alton/Gilmanton line. The lake was re-named in honor of a scoutmaster's wife. Its' outflow merges with that of Manning Lake and flows into Crystal Lake.

Definately Wicwas Lake, Lake Winnisquam, Lake Eileen, and Stamp Act Island. Salmon Meadow Cove is located between First and Second Neck(Moultonborough), Farrar point is located near Center Harbor, Carr Point is Lake Shore Park, Blaisdell and Coleman Points are located next to Carr Pt, Rum Pt is next to Minge Cove, and Black Pt is on the east entrance to Alton Bay. I don't know where Pipers is.

Piper's Island is somewhere in the vicinity of Whortleberry Island (Quadrant 4J on my Duncan Press map) but must be too tiny to label b/c I can't find it!

There is a road called Pipers Point in Alton, near the Wolfeboro area of Springfield Point. Homes there overlook the Varneys.

Pipers point in Alton is the closest point of mainland to Barndoor Island.

Hornet's Nest Point, Farrar Point, Salman Meadow Cove (I question the spelling on this one as well), Carr Point, Blaisdell Point, Colman Point (sp?),
Rum Point, Black Point, Pipers Point

The answer is Yes = Horne's Nest point across from Big Beaver Island
Farar Point across from Little Two Mile Island going to Center Harbor on the left
Salmon Meadow cove down to the left of Iroquois across from Swallow Point
Carr Point is just before Ellacoya State park comming from Alton
Blaisdell Point and Coleman Point are across from Diamond Island
Rum Point is if you comming from Minge Cove just before going to Wilder's Cove
Black Point well there are two of them one in Moultonboro just before Ambrose cove and the otheris in Alton just before Chestnut Cove
Pipers Point is the other side of Brickyard Cove across from Barndoor Island
