Default Family Dollar-Meredith

New store coming to Meredith! What's happening at the former bowling alley? It is getting reconstructed into a Family Dollar www.familydollar.com. It should do very well in that spot and will probably be a very good fit for the local economy. For example, a large boater size, maybe 13 ounce size of vasoline cost 2.25 at Family Dollar-Plymouth which is less than Wal-Mart (2.84), CVS (4.29), or Rite Aid (3.99 w/ 50% off for a 2nd container) and Family Dollar sells things like 1 1/2" angle paint brushes with big heavy wood handles for 1.95.

A new store opening in Meredith that has a very good opportunity to be a long time success, year-round business in that super-terrific new retail location for years and years. While the nearby vacant retail store between the Rite Aid and Olympic Sports over at the over-priced Hannaford mini mall remains vacant since November, 2008, the former bowling alley building should soon be home to a happening business, your FAMILY DOLLAR!

Family Dollar is not a dollar store where everything sells for one dollar. Prices are mostly in the UNDER TEN DOLLAR range and probably go up to twenty or so but most items are consumer, everyday items for low prices like for a dollar or two or three or something like 79-cents or something.

FDO on the NY stock exchange with a market capitalization of 6.4 billion dollars so it's a very "for real" business. It has over 6800 different stores in 44 states plus Washington DC and was first started back in 1959 by a 21-year old in Charlotte, North Carolina. http://corporate.familydollar.com/pages/history.aspx

Hi FLL, I would agree with you, ( except that when they know it is You )... There is a cover charge what automatically is applied! Now, we have all gotten together here and pay into a fund, that lowers the price that you have to pay at the check-out stand. ( so in other words, we pay more just to keep you around.)

I always supported local and comunity stores, Restaurants and others. It is however your time to give back in these very difficult times ( with the economy being what it is these days.)...
Priceless, fatlazyless! Ragh Ragh Ragh!!

Here's a big surprise.....the 2-dollar, 3" paint brush does not seem to shed any bristles when used with grey oil primer, and the $1.35 Chicken-of-the-Sea tuna fish does not shed any bones when it's made into a tuna sandwich and eaten by a hungry painter!

Yes, Family Dollar sells grocery style foods like tuna, coffee and mustard as well as frozen foods.

Just for the heck of it, it would be interesting to see how much Rite Aid-Meredith charges for its' reading eyeglasses? Family Dollar-Plymouth has a large Bausch & Lomb pedestal stand full of reading glasses for six dollars each.

Family Dollar was started in Charlotte NC in 1959, and Dollar Tree was started in Norfolk, VA in 1953. Neither chain is a franchise, and both are publicly owned by their shareholders ....., DLTR-nasdaq, and FDO-ny stock xchange.

www.dollartree.com is a dollar store where everything costs one dollar.

www.familydollar.com is a store where most items cost less than five dollars. It's a store where your dollar is worth more, or something like that.

Something tells me that the new Meredith NH, former bowling alley location, which for the last 45-years was the local bowling alley, will be doing lots of Meredith business with both the locals and the visiters. That location has huge visibilty from the street, and should have easy and fast parking because it is a stand alone store as opposed to a mall store. It's the type of place where you can get in and out fast, and it has a big inventory of all sorts of items and has low price points.

The sign already attached to the construction entrance says something like "No Curse Words and No Smoking Allowed inside this Store!" so it most likely has a long history for doing business on the poorer side of its' 6800 different 44-states locations starting in Charlotte, NC. As far as I know, Family Dollar does not carry any cigarettes, chewing tobacco, snuff, beer, wine, wine coolers, lottery tickets, or newspapers. They just sell general household merchandise, consumer products like health, cosmetics, canned and packaged food items, & frozen food items, and some pretty good 3" wide paints brushes for just two bucks.

If you were hoping that Whole Foods or Trader Joe's would be opening up at the big vacant store space between the Rite Aid and the Olympic Sports, then you just might be a little surprised that you actually like the new Family Dollar. It's not a Dollar Store, it's a well organized and clean store where your dollar goes further.

Old fashioned corn brooms for sweeping the floor for $5.50. That easily beats the prices at the nearby Aubuchon Hardware or even at Wal-Mart. Locally, it comes closest to resembling the old Ben Franklin store except for the craft items.

I can tell you that there are Family Dollar stores everywhere , there are a few upstate New York as well as NYC I have been to them and they are decent. You can get snack food at a good price and they do have bargains, you get what you pay for but its worth it sometimes as the price makes it worth it.

Lincoln might as well be in a foreign country.

From Google, it says that 566 Main St #D, Laconia NH 03246 has a Family Dollar and I never knew that? I wonder, where the heck is 566 Main St in Laconia?

The Family dollar store must be the one at the corner by the stop sign on Main street. It's a couple of doors up from the Funky Monkey lounge. The old Colonial theater would be up on the right from the stop sign.

There's a Family Dollar store in Ossipee next to Tractor Supply if that's closer for anyone who wants a preview.

Sounds great.....

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/retai...ly_dollar.html

However their stock is up 133% since 2008. So that is good for them and their investors.

Now sorry, but where is this store going in?

In Meredith, on route 3 North, in the old bowling / billiards place, on the right side of the road (headed North) just past the Meredith Ford dealership .

So, I made an investigative visit to an un-disclosed Family Dollar store location yesterday and found out that while Family Dollar does not sell any cigarettes, beer, wine, lottery tickets, newspapers or ready-to-drink cups of coffee; they do sell small boxes of Nestle Raisinettes and a very similar chocolate covered raisin in a larger bag size from a different candy-maker for what seemed like some low prices.

So, with the Meredith police station just up the street, the new Meredith store
should become a safe retail environment for making that stop to get your daily chocolate covered raisin fix! Just be sure to keep those raisinettes out of your pocket or purse before paying for them! Understand!

If the store management had any brains, it seems like they could do some real good business selling cigarettes, beer, wine, lottery tickets, newspapers, and ready-to-drink cups of coffee and just forget about the chocolate raisinettes? So, what's up with this policy?

Because:
a. there are a million convenience stores within a 1 mile radius that sell the things you listed
b. it is impossible to sell cigs, beer, and wine for $1. Heck, $1 won't even cover the tax on those items.

I guess no one remembers Dr. Cataldo who had the venue constructed. Dr. Cataldo had his office where the old police station is.

For 5.50, the Plymouth - Family Dollar has a regular corn broom suitable for sweeping the floor, outside deck, or waving off prospective property buyers who wander past your "No Trespassing" signs. It was made in Mexico and had a real wood handle; a regular broom.

Across the parking lot at the Plymouth Hannaford's, which is a huge store complete with a pharmacy, the only broom for sale was an angle corn broom, also made in Mexico, and priced at 11.95.

That's a big difference, 5.50 verse 11.95 for two very similar products that do the same thing, sweep the floor or outside deck or whatever.

Citation? I can't find anything to indicate that they do, at least not directly. NASDAQ has them listed as 50% owned by institutional investors:

FLL - Just a note of thanks for the tip about Family Dollar stores. We discovered the one in Rochester when we were shopping for birthday party decorations and favors for the oldest Arglet's party. He wanted a Harry Potter themed party and I was challenged to pull it off without breaking the bank.

I was able to fulfill his wish and then some for less than $30 for decorations, favors, and most of the food items other than the burgers and hot dogs, for 8 happy kiddos. The party was a big success - probably our best ever - and we kept the whole thing very affordable! Yea!

Thanks again for the tip!

Default August 25 - opening day - Meredith Family Dollar

According to a news article down at the bottom of the front page in the latest Meredith News, 75-cents printed edition; the Meredith Family Dollar should open on about August 25. Tried to make a working link, but it's a no-go, since the story does not show up at all in their freebie internet edition.

The new Family Dollar has to be the best new Meredith store to be opening in the last twenty years in Meredith. All the good stores: Tape Escape, Wardo's, Ben Franklin, www.Parafunalia.com, Heath's Hdwe Meredith, Heath's Super Meredith, and Widdershin's all either moved away or closed permanently. And what did Meredith get in their place; a Verizon Store, a Hannaford's, an Olympia Sports, a Rite Aid, and a 14000 sq ft Crosspoint storefront that's been vacant since constructed on Thanksgiving 2008. It deserves to be vacant forever! What the H happened here to all those good old stores? Meredith got Crosspointed!

Family Dollar will be a welcome addition what with their very high quality $2.50 paint brushes, chocolate covered raisins, personal care products like shampoo and toothpaste, and microwave frozen lasagna........plus there's NO cigarettes, NO lottery tickets, NO beer, NO cheap wine, NO newspapers, & No ready-to-drink cups of coffee.....budda-budda-budda-BOOM....here's come the Meredith Family Dollar.....August 25!

Default a good investment

I am not sure what the future holds for Family Dollar but it has been a good investment for us. We sold in February. I suspect that they will do well in this economy.

Helloooo Meredith......here's some great news.....the great big Family Dollar tractor trailer truck.....was seen unloading at the new Family Dollar-Meredith today....and there's a couple new Family Dollar signs up permanently on the building.....so it looks like an August 25 opening just might be the real deal!

Watch out Hannaford's, Rite Aid, & Aubuchon's......here comes the Meredith Family Dollar with $2.50 - 3" paint brushes, super el cheapo cleaning items, and frozen microwave lasagna.....thud...thud...thud...thud....it's getting closer!

...and Nestle Goobers, too!

So, what the heck is a Goober?

Default ...scientific pizza comparison; Family Dollar vs Wal-Mart

$3.98 Plymouth Wal-Mart: four-cheese Great Value brand, 28.2 oz

$3.50 Plymouth Family Dollar: four-cheese Red Baron brand, 20.66 oz

So the Wal-Mart brand is heavier and costs 48-cents more.

But what are you paying per ounce for that cheese?

Wal-Mart:
$3.98/28.2oz = $0.141/oz

Family Dollar
$3.50/20.66oz = $0.169/oz

Overall, you're paying less per ounce for the Wal-Mart brand. (Not sure if the quality is worth the savings or not. There's some things that aren't a bargain; bad cheese is one of them, closely followed by bad beer and bad wine! )

A little local history here; sometime unknown to me back in the 1920's, 30's, 40's or 50's, sometime or other, the land under the Family Dollar used to be a water wetland that was totally underwater, and the existing Plymouth St was the nearest road. It was a large backwater and wildlife area that feed into Lake Winnipesaukee which it still is but somewhat reduced in size.

You just might catch a glimpse of a great blue heron out behind the Family Dollar in Meredith.

For about forty-five years or something, the building was a ten pin, small ball, bowling ally, I think?

Who knows, only time will tell, but maybe this Family Dollar will be here selling $3.50 Red Barron Pizzas and $1.25 Nestle Goobers, for the next 40 years! Something to look forward to!

Default ....Meredith Family Dollar is now open!

Are you totally bored out of your mind, and looking for something to do?

Suggest you head down to the baby care section at the new Meredith Family Dollar and pick up an extra large jar of vaseline for about $2.25 and then go rub the vaseline onto your boat outdrive or outboard motor lower unit; the stuff renews and revives hard black rubber, vinyl, bellows, aluminum, stainless steel and factory original painted surfaces that have the original Mercury phantom black paint from the MerCruiser factory. Vaseline is to marine outdrives just like hot fudge is to people....your outdrive or outboard motor will thank you for it! ..

Also, it's good for black vinyl cleats and assorted black vinyl fittings on sailboats.

It's your $2.25 Family Dollar motorboat & sailboat maintenance kit in a vaseline jar! ..

Do you have stock in the Family Dollar stores? They should hire you as their #1 spokesperson.

Default Grand Opening

Just as an FYI everyone...a little birdie told me that Family Dollar will have their "official grand opening" on Saturday, Sept 10th. They are raffling off a childs bicycle and a local radio station will be there as well. Just in case anyone is looking for something to do that day.

I just received an email that the Family Dollar store in Meredith is looking for a clerk. I don't know if anyone is interested. Fatlazyless- maybe you would like the position. I bet you will get a big employee discount.

Overall, you're paying less per ounce for the Wal-Mart brand. (Not sure if the quality is worth the savings or not. There's some things that aren't a bargain; bad cheese is one of them, closely followed by bad beer and bad wine! )
Smart lady! Thats the deal with these stores! Do the math! I think that TIN building is ugly....... Personally........

Considering for what they had to work with, I think it's a great improvement from what was there. Just my 2 cents...

Default Good point

We stopped in Big Lots last W/E. What a dump that place is inside. They had some bargains but overall I'd say mostly junk that other stores couldn't sell and much of it was what I'd consider pricy.
Oh back to my original point, the building is part of the Belknap Mall and it looks kinda nice from the outside, so outside appearance doesn't always mean the inside will look clean and neat.
A lot of these little places have really been creeping up on prices. I used to visit Cheapo Depot a couple of times a year. About 2 years ago I noticed some of their prices were higher then I could get fresh, not outdated or stale products for at Sam's club. When I mentioned this the owner said if you don't like the prices you can always look somewhere else. That was the last time I've bought anything there. I do occasionally stroll through, but unless it is a real bargain I walk out not spending any money.
I used to get all my bleach from him, I'd buy it 15-20 at a time when he had it, then he went up so much that it wasn't worth going out of my way when for a few cents more I could get it locally and not travel out of my way.

Not sure if your talking about the same place but this store is in Meredith that use to house the bowling alley. Considering what was previously in place, this has been a nice addition to the town of Meredith...

Nope different store, just making a point about appearance. Big Lots looks nice on the outside but inside is pretty dumpy. Someone stated that the Family Dollar didn't look all that appealing from the outside, in a round about way I was making reference t the fact that outside appearance doesn't always matter.
