Removal of Moss on Roof
Hi, we have a small cottage at the end of Echo Point, Alton Bay that I need to get the moss of the roof. It is a low roof. Can you recommend someone who could do this? Thank you.

You can do it yourself with a garden sprayer plus Wet & Forget

I live near Portland, Oregon where it rains a lot and moss is always an issue.
The best product I've found to kill moss on a roof is zinc sulfate, and to kill moss in a lawn use ferrous sulfate. Both are available in large bags (forty to fifty or so pounds) at farm supply stores.

You don't need to get up on the roof. The "Wet and Forget" is disbursed through a "thingy" that you screw on to the end of a hose and you just shoot it up there! However, if you have flowers or shrubs that will be hit by the solution coming off the roof you need to cover them or direct the low away from them or they will die. Good Luck!

I have used Wet and Forget on a low roof where I used a stepladder with a pump sprayer and also found that it would reach the top of the roof while standing on the ground. I understand that zinc strips applied at the ridge will eliminate the problem and may be a viable method as it will last years. I had not heard of the ferrous sulfate for yard moss and will have to try that. How is it applied.

For roof moss I carry the powder in a bucket and apply two horizontal lines of zinc sulfate on each side of the roof, the upper line hugging the peak of the roof, the other about half way down; try to time the application so that a light rain follows it and dissolves the product so that it trickles down the roof and contacts and is absorbed by the moss. Avoid applying it on a windy day or before a moderate to heavy rain.

Thanks Mr V. I need to do this and I suppose the best time of the year will be early spring and fall.
As an aside I applied Scott's Halts Plus this spring with disappointing results. ------------------------------------------------- I am a retired workaholic and continuing aquaholic |

I had a real problem with moos on my garage roof. I installed zinc strips along the ridge of my roof and within a few months the moss was gone, Over time the rain washes down the moss. Was able to buy at a roofing supply house.

Yes, Really...
That's "Junior-moose", looking down at Mom-moose from the roof of the Zimmer's house in Anchorage, Alaska.
