Which one of these guys should be the Laconia Bike Week Executive Director?
Anthony Santagate from Tower Hill Tavern brought us Biketemberfest and Wake The Lake. Now he is organizing a Blues Festival for the Fall. It seems like this guy knows how to party. Does anyone think this man could take over the position of Laconia Motorcycle Week Executive Director and bring Bike Week back to its former glory? Not sure of the politics but he is certainly making a great effort to boost the economy in Weir’s Beach. I wish him the best of luck. Whoever he is in the picture.

Just as the Harley Davidson generation is dying off so will bike week. It will continue but I don't think it will ever go back to it's former glory days. The younger generation just doesn't have the same passion for motorcycles.

If he focuses his attention on Bike Week, who will bring these new events to the area and keep them functioning properly?

I suspect the point was a lot more people used to come and leave a lot more money in the pockets of the local merchants.

In the 90's
For three years (96,97,98, I think) we had offshore powerboat racing on Winnipesaukee. It drew some good crowds, but it was difficult to monetize, so it was tough to get sponsors to build the prize money. All the spectators came by boat and when the races were over, they went home. There isn't enough docking anyplace for spectators to go to a central port and spend money. If you don't have a boat, you can't really see the races in the Broads. It appears the antique boat races in Wolfeboro, on a smaller scale, do well. I guess you still can't go by boat and find room to tie up.

The Offshore races were a tough sell on Winni as there were very few spectators... the races could not be seen from shore.
The Vintage races in Wolfeboro work because of relatively low overhead, and the races can be seen from shore. If you go to Key West for the races... the boats run right along the shoreline for approx 1/2 - 3/4 mile or so... Woodsy

The races were well attended by boaters. It really is too bad there is not a way to monetize them so that there is sufficient income to cover the cost. It would be great to see them come back. |

We enjoyed the races and would love to see them come back too. I remember we were disappointed when they announced they lost their sponsors. And I know we discussed it before but remember the accident at the last turn toward Wolfeboro when they flew out of the boat? That was scary but all was ok.
