Talking 1950 - "Where to in the Lakes Region" Magazine

(Photo above is of the Ledges on Newfound Lake)

You're all familiar with the "Where to in New Hampshire" Magazines which are still published and can be found at most rest stops and tourist information booths. I have come across one from 1950. It includes a description of each town arranged by lake; Lake Winnipesaukee, Newfound Lake, Squam Lake and Ossipee Lake etc. It also has sections that describe; Boy's and Girl's Camps, Industry, Agriculture, Hunting, Boating, Photo Contest, Fishing, Skiing, Theatre and Real Estate. I wish I could scan the whole thing but it is 104 pages and too time-consuming! I'll also intersperse a few postcards for comparison purposes.

Recognize the building above? It is across from the Riverview Cemetary in Alton Village and is now owned by NH Public Servce Electric Coop (or whatever it is called!)

The General Wolfe, formerly Pinkham's Farm, is now the Windrifter Resort. Located near Kingswood Golf Course right on the main drag.

Boy, a lots changed since that aerial view of the Weirs was shot! I can almost see my house in it, if it wasn't for all the trees somebodys cut down since then.

Default Aerial Shot of the Weirs

Weirs Guy: Here's another aerial shot of the Weirs (from probably the 50s) that you may find interesting.

P.S. - that is the orange roof of a Howard Johnson's restaurant near the drive-in entrance.

Default Time flys

Enjoyed so much looking at all the old pictures but did not see any of Meredith. I remember spending summers in the 1950's out on Bear and shopping in Meredith at Weeks Meat Market for food and going to the ice house to get ice to bring back across the lake for our icebox. We would start with a large block but by the time we got back to the boat 2hp and across to the cabin we had just the right amount left to fit in the box. What memories and how things have changed.

jerseyonbear:
thanks for that great story! Regretfully only one page on Meredith in the whole book!

However, this may be a postcard of about that time period. I don't see Week's Market but if you look closely you'll see that it's an A&P on the left.

Love these old pix. Most of them were from when I was a kid. I may be older but I still haven't grown up

Thanks McDude. Loved the Allen A resort pics. I don't think there's any resorts left on Lake Wentworth? Still have Camp Bernadette though. Do you have any historical pics of Camp Bernadette?
