Lemon Grass

We lost power the other night, so decided to give Lemon Grass a try. Quite frankly, a PB & J would have been a better choice. Two rather soggy fish platters, served lukewarm, no drinks, no desserts, $50 with tip. It was not worth the trip.

Funny place, i have had good, but expensive meals there, yet have not been in a few years.

...but it is my favorite restaurant in the Lakes Region. Never had a bad meal there, always fresh and tasty. Fish and chips, totally non traditional, is excellent as is the haddock. Having said that, I usually get the sushi. But every restaurant can have an off night.

We've had good luck there also. Sushi has been good when we've gone. I agree they could have had an off night. Maybe the regular chef was off?

I love lemongrass, haven't had a bad meal there yet. You should have sent it back.

I've never had one of their entrées but have been there for lunch many times. The only thing that I've had is their BENTO Boxes and like them very much.

Second the Bento Boxes....like them so much I've never tried anything else.

I have been to Lemon Grass multiple times over the years and have always had great meals, but I do agree it is expensive.

Unfortunately I had friend in from Japan and was totally embarrassed with the experience. Food was not up to par.

It certainly isn't bad, but $20+ for chicken curry ? It never made sense to me. Prices are just over the top for what you receive. In a setting where they had competition they'd be done real quick.

You must be joking, right? Where around here are you going to buy an entre for LESS than $20?

I have dined here at least 20x in the last 3 years and I always am pleased with the food and the creativity. The prices are very fair for the level of environment, service and food quality.

In Boston/Cambridge ? There are one or more Thai places on every block that have a similar dish for $11-$15. $21 for Chicken Curry, while quite good, is not right. If they can do it downtown you can do it in NH.

And there are plenty of places up there you can go for under $20 an entree.

Lemon Grass is our most preferred eatery. We have been there often and cannot recall a single poor experience. Healthy and exceptional fare from our point of view.

There are several dishes that are great and then others that we would never have again but that's because it is a strong ethnic restaurant and not everyone has a desire for some of the ethnic dishes . This is no American steak and burger joint so if that's what your after this isn't the right place . If your in the mood for these ethnic dishes then its very good.
service is always very good, people are nice, and the place is very clean .
I am very critical of a lot of the lakes region restaurants but this is one that is very good IF THIS IS THE TYPE FOOD YOU ARE IN THE MOOD FOR .

As far as prices , you do have to keep in mind they are open year round and unlike Boston they probably have several months with limited income and need the season to make the year . cost of the location .

You need to understand that the majority of posters to the restaurant section here remember when a McDonald's burger cost 15 cents and most of them can't understand why it still does not cost 15 cents. The rest are just once a year special occasions diners. Or they reside in areas of the country that have real restaurants that do offer entrées in the $20 - $50 range. Had dinner last weekend in Portsmouth and the entrées were in the $28-$32 range. and the place on a Sunday night at 8 PM was full, not in the process of closing.

We had a gal who came from Thailand as an adult living nearby.
She go a job right away there.
She was hired as a cook.
Her conclusion. This ain't no Thai food.
While there they/she did offer some Thai food but recipes from her.
She's gone now.

Real Thai food varies by region in Thailand. Southern, northern, coastal, etc.
In the US very few Thai restaurants offer authentic Thai food as some of the spices are not available in the US.

...with Mike Love, Lemon Grass was never supposed to be authentic Thai food but rather Asian fusion or delicious dishes with Asian flavors. Still tastes mighty good.

Great point , to this day it's marketed as Asian Fusion on the web site , Facebook and the other on line media sites . The food has various flavors that will appeal to a lot of people but not everyone . It's great food but no one is calling it typical New England fare.

I have had their Sushi and Sashimi. I thought it was great. In such a seasonal town, and serving sushi grade fish, while maintaining a sophisticated atmosphere, the prices are as reasonable as can be.
