Off season suggestions

This will be our first year spending time at the Lake in the off season. We bought a place near Weirs Beach but it seems a lot of places are seasonal.

I would love some suggestions for good year-round casual dining around Weirs Beach or elsewhere in the lakes region for delicious food!

The Lobster Pound stays open. Cactus Jacks and T-Bones are also open year round. Worth the short drive is Lyon's Den our favorite, their bar is casual, as is everything once the leaves fall. Patrick's is also open year round and is always good. Most of the places in Meridith stay open all year. Fratello's in Laconia also stays open.

The Weirs itself becomes a ghost town, but a ten minute drive gets you to places that are not very busy in the off season.

Once the lake freezes, usually around New Years, you will often see eagles fishing the channel. They can be seen in the tall pines along the road near the channel and eating their catch on the ice near the Weirs or at the entrance of Paugus Bay.

It is rather nice to be there in the winter, but it is different and very quiet. There is no traffic!!!!

I'm listening to a third alarm being toned out on the Wide Open Saloon / AKA the Smoke House, I don't think that will be an option for a while. Might present some interesting traffic problems on the bridge, at least today..

I suggest Burrito me in downtown Laconia. My husband and I get their Burritos usually once a week. They make great Mexican food.

I second the suggestion for T-Bones and CJ. Get a paybcks card especially if you are over 55.

Also 2nd the suggestion for the Lyon's den, somewhat more upscale/expensive than T-B/CJ but a special place with great food and service..

Burrito Me in Laconia=great
Crazy Gringo on Weirs Beach is quite good also.
Canoe in Center Harbor always yummy
Kevin's Cafe and Lemon Grass on Route 25 in Moultonboro also terrific

Kevin's is also terrific for breakfast, as is the VK (Country Cookin) on Route 25 in Moultonboro

In Alton, right down the road from you on Route 11, is The William Tell Inn. They are right now just starting their Oktoberfest menu. The food is to die for, excellent.

Buy the best steak tips and marinated chicken at the Wine'ing Butcher, which is close to you in little mall where Patrick's Pub is located. Patrick's also has good food-pub style

Close to Weirs Beach is Boomer's Place by the Bay - other end of Weirs Blvd. Casual and affordable, it's going to be a winter favorite for us.

All these combine coziness for the cold months, with great good. None are cheap!

We went to the Common Man in Ashland on Saturday. Casual dining. We all got the Filet Mignon......very delicious. The waitress (I beleive her name was Denise), made the dining experience perfect. Not too many places can you go these day and get a good meal and decent service.

The Mug is open all year as well. It is located just past Meredith center stay straight instead of heading up the hill - technically in Center Harbor.

We ate at Mame's last weekend and it was really good! It was our first date night in waaaay too long, and we were looking for somewhere casual, but good that we could relax and enjoy ourselves. My husband got the prime rib and stuffed shrimp combo, and I got the filet. They were both delicious! I snuck a bite of his shrimp, and it made me wish I had gotten some, too! We finished with dessert...a Denver pudding that was beyond good. We were very happy, and a bit surprised. The last time we had went, it was just ok. Must have been an off night. Can't wait for Grammie to take the kids again!

Thought I would mention Patrick's in Gilford. They also have live entertainment....makes for a fun night when not much is happening during the off season.

I may be bias because it is and has been a personal favorite, but Hart's is open for turkey year round. I go everytime I visit the lake and the food is as good as ever. If you are in the hankering for Thanksgiving Dinner, you can get it anytime and all year round, except for a couple major holidays.

I try to like Harts, partly because I used to go as a kid in my single digit years, and years after that. IMO, the food was way better, even very good, years and years ago. The last few times I've been, it's just OK, and every time I return I think it might be the good one. The service is usually good though. It's just not for me anymore I guess.

Hi Steve:

I had this conversation with Russell Hart a few years ago and he assured me nothing has changed as far as recipe or preperation methods. In my opinion, there's not much that can be done with standard roast turkey, mashed potatos and gravy and some steamed veggie. It's kind of like Denny's.

In MY single digits, I worked there for three days. Hated it!
