Default Lost Ice Clusters

We had 2 ice clusters disappear with the spring thaw from the end of Spindle Point... Any chance they have washed up near you or you may have seen them on the lake? Each one consists of three, round logs held together at the top by lag bolts. It is possible the logs have become dislodged and are floating separately. Thank you!

Red face Just a Tip...

If you plan to reset your ice cluster, remember that the old location now consists of "disturbed" lake bottom, and new location should be found. (Or your new ice cluster may not make it through the next ice season).

I had a "tie-off" piling that the winter ice leaned over a few degrees. The installer cautioned me about "disturbed" lake bottom, so I had it moved about six feet, and driven downwards another four feet—which wasn't enough to secure that piling for the next ice season.

It now lies about eight feet under—on the bottom, and we don't miss it.

I hadn't heard the term before, but the context suggested the three pilings connected together on the right.

Check the bottom of the lake. Hopefully they were pushed over by the ice and sank. I can't imagine what it would be like to hit something like that bobbing around out there in the lake, yikes.

One "ice cluster" has floated against my shoreline this week. They were installed in recent years where many pilings had been placed before. Although connected together with real bolts (good), the location was a bad idea by the contractor. (Although the docks were saved—these "ice clusters" do float).

Looking upwind, where I wouldn't haven't suggested installing one, this year, all three have disappeared!

Question Sooooo

These three ice clusters did their job and protected their dock? If that's the case, yay for the dock!
