Default What happens to the lake if Romney wins?

I don't want to start a political conversation here, just trying to understand the implications as it applies to the lake, if Romney becomes President. I'm sure he loves the lake, as do most all of us, and would probably want to continue to enjoy it with his family on occasion. Taking that as a given, what would be the impact to the "defensive zone" that most likely would be set up around the compound?

If you remember when he was Govenor he had a rope line that streched pretty far off shore. So I would say if elected that area would be totally off limits. JMHO

I don't think any new president will have a lot of time to vacation and kick back - they will be totally consumed trying to re-orient our country back to a jobs-based economy that they will be luck to leave the Oval office for lunch.

The white line in place when he was Massachusetts governor wasn't his doing, it was the security forces. The locals know him, and politely ignore him. Now I am not ignorant of the difference between being a governor and being president, so clearly there will have to be security measures in place.

It would be interesting, to say the least.

And diving Clark's Point would probably result in a life-changing encounter with a Navy Seal. Even if he becomes the nominee, say buh-bye to that dive site.

And can you imagine the Secret Service detail on a Sunday when President Romney heads to the church north of downtown? Main Street would be cordoned off, locked down, gridlocked and lined with black Suburbans filled with gun-toting dudes in armor.

And then there's the news media...satellite trucks, primping talking heads, traffic...

Just sayin'...

I'm more worried about Air Force One coming in over my boat into Laconia airport. Think they can land a 747 in there?

More likely they land in Boston and Marine One to Laconia.

We need someone who lives on Martha's Vineyard to weigh in. They've experienced it first-hand.

If he makes the Wolfeboro house his "CAMP DAVID" then we could be in for some challenging summer moments. But, IMHO, any inconvenience in the Wolfeboro area would be worthwhile for the the value of having a business man running the country again ....

I used to work in an office at Pease. When Bush visited, he would fly in to Pease and they'd shut traffic down while the black SUVs and all the security escorts went by, then they'd head up 95.

K'port is 45 minute drive from Pease, Wolfeboro is about an hour. I'd bet they'd drive instead of the helicopter, probably with a rolling blockade up 16 and 11.

Between the security and the gawkers, it played major havoc with the traffic everywhere along the route.

If they use one of the 747's, Hanscom AFB not Boston Logan would be better for security purposes.

Manchester can take 'heavies' now but they'd probably use Pease because there is still an Air Force presence there, if they didn't use Hanscom.

I would think they would use Pease too. It would be closest and it is a great runway and as you said, the AF still have a presence there. I wish Pease would get another commercial airline in there.

OMG, you should send that to him at his Wolfeboro address.
That is an awesome Idea.....
Wouldn't that be something, having to hold the Mount out in the Broads while he did his arrival and departures?

I was living in Wells, ME when the Papa Bush was president, and lemme tell you... nothing could screw up summertime traffic like Team Pres coming into town... and that was before 9-11 - security wasn't as tight back then as it is today!

And isn't there an airport in Wolfeboro or Tuftonboro?

There used to be an airport in Wolfeboro on Wolfeboro Neck but someone decided it would be better suited as a Condo Park. Trouble is, nobody was buying or building. I think the Marriot's own the land now.

There's no airport in Tuftonboro. Nearest airport on the Wolfeboro side of the lake is on Rt 25 in Moultonboro. NB

The Marriott's do own whatwas once the airport. It was subdivided into building lots with septic systems and underground utilities in place before the bottom dropped out of the housing market. The Marriott's bought the whole shebang. They have close ties to the Romney's and it would be an easy place to land a helicopter. However, I recently talked to someone who worked in the White House under Bush and asked about how he would get into town if he were President. The answer I was given was that he would fly into Pease on Air Force One and then by helicopter right up to the neighborhood which could be the hospital, golf course, Clark Park. There would not be a lot of traffic tie ups, but the people who live down Clark Rd. In the area where he lives will have tough screening to go through every time they go in or out whenever he would be in residence.

Let's assume he will land in Pease and drive the motorcade in normal situations. According to the map thing it's 47 minutes. It's 42 minutes to Laconia, but that means a smaller plane or a transfer of planes.

In emergency situation they can land Marine One on the golf course or in the lake! The usual helicopter is amphibious.

The runway of the old Wolfeboro Airport is now a road, but it really would make a better runway than what used to be there.

When Obama visited Acadia National Park in Maine, he arrived in a Gulfstream III. Clinton also flew on a Gulfstream III

Who knows what they'll use but given the short flight from Andrews AFB to New England it makes more sense to fly the smaller planes.

Again, I will be surprised if they don't use Sanford. They already have the logistics worked out and can heli from there.

I was in Claremont in 94/95 when Clinton visited. I have seen a fair share of motorcades

...but my Dad tells me, at one time, there were many airports in Tuftonboro!

'Course, that was in the 1930s, when any green field was "an airport".

—including the 10th green at the "Bald Peak Golf Course" where many golfer-pilots would land to play golf!

Air Force 1 is not always the widebody 747. It's whatever plane the president flies on.

When Bush I and Bush II were up for trips to Maine, the most common method was for them to fly the smaller plane into Sanford and then use motorcade to K-port. Sometimes, they would use the 747 into Pease but that was the exception, not the norm. Then they high-tailed it up the Maine Turnpike.

If Romney were to get elected President, there are a couple options they could do. They could fly to Pease and helicopter to Laconia then motorcade. They could do the same operation but instead fly to Sanford then Laconia via heli. Or the could use a plane direct to Laconia but I don't know enough about what planes they use and runway length to know what works and what doesn't.

Here's a picture of Air Force One at Sanford Maine I snagged from the web. You can clearly see it's not a 747....

Marine One can land on three plywood disk on the White House lawn. I am sure they can find a spot near Brewster or the Golf Course. If I was over there, I would be proud to let Marine One land in my yard no matter who was aboard.

As long as I could post the pictures of course.

When I am in DC, I always stop to look up in pride of the power of the office of the President.

OMG, It would be most appreciated my friend! My son has been bitten by the bass disease after I told him about the "reef" that exists off our dock that you told me about. He suspected such, and has since pulled multiple bass as well as a very cantankerous pickeral from this "line" that you drew for me. The "slugos?" you gave me that day have worked everywhere. CT River, Winnie, you name it. Thank you again! J's preffered lure is mostly now topwater lures but he has introduced me to salty crayfish.

We will be up there the first week of September, J and I, and would love to hook up with you. He wants to rent a pontoon for the week and I am in agreement that this would be the best way to access the weedy areas that produce. I was real disspointed to hear about Conway's closing. It's nice when your son appreciates fin and fur as a pasttime.

Mitt must have been spending the holiday weekend up at the lake, because he was in Laconia's 4th of July parade yesterday! I figure it was the closest one to his place so he could do a little campaigning and get back to enjoying the lake.

True. Maybe they'll recondition an amphibian out of moth-balls and resurect the call-sign "Navy One."

If he gets elected--The USAF uses smaller jet aircraft that coud land in Laconia- Helicopter Marine 1 and doubles would be everywhere- I lived near Kennebunkport Maine during Bush1 and the Helicopter traffic was everywhere = annoying.
Kennebunk and the Kennebunkport still attact people today due to the Bush family living there- it might be a boom for local business and or a curse to quiet smalltown life.

No matter what happens to Mitt in the presidential race you can't fault the guy if he wants to take a vacation and decides to head to the lake just like everyone else on this forum does. If he does win and comes to the lake I don't begrudge him for doing so, it will without a doubt screw the area up while he's in town. Remember too that will extend beyond whatever time he may be in the White House (if he gets that far).

As a side note, get educated on the candidates running for President and vote. It's not only a privilege but an obligation as a citizen. Many have died or sacrificed a great deal so you have the ability to do so!

Default What if???

Three years ago Romney bought the La Jolla, California oceanfront home of a former San Diego Mayor and her "Jack In The Box" founder husband. The 3000+ sq. ft., $12,000,000 property will be bulldozed to make way for a 12,000 sq. ft. "West Coast White House" (Maybe) It is in close proximity to the San Diego Mormon Temple and according to Mitt....he wants to be where he can hear the waves! Close to SD Airport for AF One....and all those Camp Pendleton Marines just up the road... What does this mean for the Romney "camp" on Lake Winnipesaukee?

I don't think it would mean anything for the Romney camp on Winnipesaukee... except maybe reduced use.... Romney bought the camp because he liked the area, unless he no longer enjoys the lake, he will still want to use it....

Sounds like he'll need me to be his personal caretaker for his 'camp' in Wolfeboro.

Have you seen his Christmas card? I think his family can keep more than one house full with plenty to spare.

Can't tell if this picture was taken at the lake?

Great looking Family!

What's up with the matching "outfits" on all the kids? (Maybe they got one of those coveted 30% off coupons from Kohl's?)

The little bit of the house you can see looks to be the same color as his lake house and the trees and bushes look like typical NH stuff. Just guessing.

Here is a family picture from the 2008 Campaign that is from Winnipesaukee.

The guy on the right end of the picture looks like he is wearing the same shirt , wearing the same smile and holding the same baby that didn't grow at all over the course of a year and the baby has the same black outfit on. What's that all about?

Bingo. This is going to be it. NH lake home probably only a tactic. A sideline in his goals. Of course, his extended family may use the lake home. I have no idea what security will be instituted for just family members.

I visited area up close to former President Nixons home in San Clemente, California. And security was quite tight with cameras everywhere on all nearby streets. Friends and I stopped on public street unknowing that Nixons home was nearby. Police arrived in less then one minute. Nixon was not there. This was at night and none of us saw any signs.

I visited area near President Nixons home in Key Biscayne, Florida. Near Miami, Florida. Again cameras everywhere with signs that stated No Stopping Do not get out of vehicle. As a young curious person I stopped and got out. On all utility poles were loud speakers. And over the loud speaker came the stern words - Get back into you car NOW. Nixon was not there. We promptly left the area. Key Biscayne is quite nice.

Default Brilliant! Bravo!

That needs to be published in the Union Leader, or maybe some newspaper that people really read, like the Laconia Sun.

With material like that you could write for Stephen Colbert, I heard he was running!

It was a bit of a hassle when he was there. THey closed the whole road down so you couldn't go through. When he wasn't there it was fine.

OK I'm feeling better about him landing in Pease and going direct to Wolfeboro.

When the French President rented the house around the corner from Mitt, they shut down a favorite anchoring spot. So President Mitt is welcome, but he can't bring any friends.

If you click on this page it will show you the location of Romney's home. There is a red square around the property. I imagine the "red perimeter" will have to be enlarged if he is there as POTUS.

Default Maybe he will come by seaplane

One day last summer he must have had some vip's up for lunch because there were 2 seaplanes taking turns landing in S Wolfeboro bay and taxing in to shore. I would say they landed about a dozen times coming in, and the same later around 5 o'clock leaving. Pretty cool.

I wonder if the neighbors could apply for a tax abatement due to lost usage from the security zone...or even sue Romney for lost property value. Security zones don't just go away after their subject is out of office...

Here's hoping it doesn't become an issue...for one reason or another.

That's a De Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver. Arguably the most well known and rugged bush plane ever. Single Pratt & Whitney Radial engine of 450 HP. Built from 1948 to 1969. Eight passengers including pilot. Still used extensively in Washington State/Puget Sound .. and Alaska. NB

It's always nice to hear about our own, here in Connecticut, Pratt & Whitney.

A seashore frontage in K'prt, ME has its own challenges, but there has to be more concern with line of sight to the compound in Wolfeboro? Top of Rattlesnake, Varney, Worcester, Barndoor Islands? It is an expansive area to be covered to protect POTUS. This isn't the Mass State Police protecting the Gov. It's the Secret Service protecting the President of the United States. I don't think it is a rope 125 ft from shore. Think about folkes. I could be a BIG zone!

Pine needles is right. We could have submarines, coast guard cutters and aircraft carriers positioned around the lake. maybe the secret service will take over the islands as lookouts?

What happens?

New Hampshire gets mentioned on the news as much as Maine and Texas did.

Our biggest industry is tourism.

I can see the Mount having a "Summer White House Cruise".

In March, 1991, Vice President Dan Quayle went skiing at Waterville Valley and his vice president's airplane landed at Laconia Airport. Traveling up Rt 93 from Gilford to WV, Rt 93 was closed on both sides, north and south, and the VP caravan traveled north on the south bound side. When he was skiiiing the secret service surrounded him on the ski trail almost like a football team protecting the quarterback plus the ski trail was roped off closed at the top.

For Mitt to become the president would mean some very good business for Sawyer's ice cream and fried clams what with all the government people flying into Laconia Airport.

When MITT becomes president and wants to show off his waterski trick with the step ladder attached to the aquaboard, most likely he'll be surrounded by a group of waterskiing secret service. Way-to-go MITT!

Default I wouldn't worry about it

It's still June, very early. I don't want to say, again, that he has no chance. I just wouldn't worry about it.

Default NH's 7th fleet

I think it would be great to have a Air Craft Carrier (USS Nimitz) a submarine USS New Hampshire SSN??? A destroyer escort, and a battlewagon stationed at Lake W. But what would be better is to see them get it there and launch it. The Winniupasaukee Bell had quiten a trip from Portsmouth to Alton Bay and then a job in launching her. and that is not much bigger than a life boat on the Nimitz. Maybe the Nimitz could be launched at Victoria Pier.

Naaw...think BIIIG. How about a *bunch* of aircraft carriers, stretching from T'boro neck to Laconia. End to end. So you could drive across. Think of how much time you'd save driving across the lake instead of around it! Suddenly all the online 'search for our closest store' searches would be useful!!!

This comment made me smile... my deported 96 year old Aunt asked me with a smile on day if I had ever seen a whale in the lake... :-)

Default Once in a while when I was a student...............

I missed a day of classes now and then. Remind me again, why would anyone want to be President? If it would be hard on us to have the traffic and security details, what must it be like to have to deal with all the problems of The United States? Then take off for a weekend and have to be surrounded and have roads closed because some nut out there thinks it would be great to take a gun and kill you????

"If drafted, I will not run; if nominated I will not accept; if elected, I will not serve." William Tecumseh Sherman.

Thank God for all who serve OUR WONDERFUL COUNTRY. Our Governement is not a perfect system, but I just don't know a better one. I will proudly put up with any inconvenience that any President causes, and I will be eternally grateful for being born in America.

Happy weekend to all and wish I could be there!! May try to get there earlier.

Smile Politics coming in

It sounds to me that there is more politics starting to come into the thread than concerns about the lake.

Well boys and girls if you haven't heard, Rick Santorum just bowed out. Romney is the defacto GOP nominee now. Wonder if he'll be visiting the lake this summer? He's welcome on my dock to watch the Independence Day Centre Harbor fireworks. Maybe that'll take some of the stress off the Wolfeboro residents, at least for the day.

If he shows up for the fireworks, can you please invite me, so I can explain to him that dogs shouldn't be strapped to the top of a station wagon?

I'd also like to ask him.. "If the trees are just the right height in Michigan, what do you think of the height of our trees here at Winni?"

First off, of course you're invited Steve! But, I was trying to take some of the stress off the southern residents of the lake by having him up north. If you corner him while he is here he might make an unexpected trip back to Wolfeboro and I would hate to see a barage of PT boats with bow guns blazin' to clear a path back home.

Default Presidential Aircraft

FYI!

Whatever aircraft carries President of United States, it is always known as Air Force One or Marine One.
Laconia is far too short for the usual aircraft, as we see in media
Pease would be the airport of choice. It was resurfaced just as elder Bush was becoming President. Pease has a military presence which none of us are aware the extent! And can be beefed up.

The big 747 often used as Air Force One won't be able to land at Laconia, there are too many parachutes landing there.

Actually, for the elder Bush, while Pease was used for the 747, at least one other closer to Kennebunk small airport had an interesting "presence". I used to see them when I was flying a small airplane. I would suspect Laconia would have a "presence" also if Mitt gets elected.
