Summer Spectacular - Vintage Laconia NH Racing

Back in the day the actual races were the big draw back then, then it evolved into the social event that we see nowadays.

I remember buying my first six pack. I was faced with the dilemma of paying 99 cents for Old Milwaukee or $1.29 for Schlitz. I went for Old Milwaukee because it was cheaper. When my father saw the beer in the refrigerator he said “son, now that you’re old enough to buy beer you need to buy the good stuff...Schlitz”. How things have changed.

Where did they race in Laconia before moving to Loudon?

Thumbs up Gunstock...

The comments said Gunstock, which would have made for an interesting "road course". Even I would have liked to see motorcycles navigating a course like that. It sure beats downtown-Wolfeboro wheelies.

If you want to see some motorcycle "spills" check out the races at Nürburgring's old road course in Germany, where for about $10, you can "run-what-you-brung" over a 12-kilometer course. (Been there twice with Porsche and BMW, for ten days of "seat-time").

Sometimes, oil is spilled, which makes for slippery biking. Amazing how bikers take a tumble, sprint back to their bike, and start it back up!

We did watch the classic races at Gunstock for many years. Of course the crowd favorite was the sidecar race with best viewing at the hairpin turn.

Answer = Belknap Mountain Recreation Area most recently I think, before Bryar Motor Sport Park that eventually became the international speedway ........ however they raced and held events in lots of places including Maine at Old Orchard Beach and in downtown Laconia as well I believe.

A ton of history information about the rally can be found here with some amazing old photos including memorabilia photos ......... probably the very best site anywhere you can view about its history. Including information about why it's not at actually 100 years old even though they had the first one in 1917.
1916 =Year "Zero" - The annual Laconia Rally begins. An informal gathering of about 150 riders at Weirs Beach.

Those vintage films were great- thanks for posting.

As far as seeing "spills", the Isle of Man race (located between England and Ireland) is brutal. I've raced at Bryarsports and Daytona but I would not race at Isle of Man. It's based on time trials but the course goes through small villages and is extremely dangerous.

Me too. But not anything sanctioned. I raced my younger brother on his Honda SL-70 against my Suzuki GT-380 or was it a T-125 ........ but he only had to do 1/2 the laps I had to do.

The Back Story 45 to 50 years ago: When my parents rented in Sanborton before they owned a camp, my mother went to get her hair done one day downtown. We only had one car back then and she had to pick a day when my dad was up on vacation. Well she went and the hairdresser sensed she was tense and upset and asked my mom what was wrong, and she explained that she was nervous because us kids were out on the bikes that day and my mom hated the motorcycles and was always scared we would get hurt. To try and put her at ease the hairdresser tried too calm her with a lot of try not to worry if dad is keeping an eye on them.

Turns out to make the story short the hairdresser was Mrs. Bryar and gave my mom and family an open invite to use the track all to ourselves that evening including any bikes they had that would be (safe / age / skill level) for us to use. Needless to say we had a blast. ............ and you guessed it mom wanted nothing to do with it but my younger brother and sister and dad all had fun. Some very fond memories of the lake back then.

@ Cobalt 25 glad you enjoyed the videos. On an international music forum I managed years ago I had friend that went to the Isle of Man race's every year.
