Default Pearl Harbor Day 2011

This week marks the 70th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor 12/7/1941.

Attached is a Memorial to one of the three NH Residents aboard the USS Arizona.

More than 400,000 US service men and women lost their lives in the War that began that day 70 years ago.

Take a moment to say a silent prayer and Thank You to all of those hero's.

Default Visiting Pearl Harbor

I had the privilege to visit Pearl Harbor in 2010 and must say that it was the highlight of my weeklong stay on Oahu. It was amazing to see that after more than 68 years there was still oil leaking from the Arizona. The day before our visit, the new visitors' center was dedicated by Senator Inouye who is a WWII veteran. The anchor from the Arizona was placed on the mainland shore across from the memorial. Anyone who would like to see a very solemn place, this is the best. I was only 8 when it happened and everyone was listening on the radio. Too many died for this country and the veterans are wondering what happened since then.
Visited the Arizona Memorial a few years ago and was awed at the number of people, even Asians.

Default Pearl Harbor remembered

The new Pearl Harbor Visitor Center was dedicated on 2/16/10. The Battleship Missouri is now next to the Arizona Memorial at Ford Island so the beginning and the end of the war are commemorated side by side. The Japanese surrender was signed on the deck of the Missouri in Tokyo Bay on 9/2/45. The exact spot is marked by a bronze plaque on the deck. Inside the Arizona Memorial there are 2 short walls in front of the rear wall where the names of those lost on 12/7/41 are listed. The leftmost short wall contains the names of those who survived on Dec. 7th, but have passed away since. These men wished to be entombed with their comrades, and the names and the dates their ashes were lowered into the Arizona are on this wall. The ranger explained that as of Feb. 2010 there were still 23 survivors of the Arizona still living. Since then, one more name has been added to that wall, and another will be added this Wednesday on the 70th anniversary.
