Default Cigarette Butts and floatable detritus downtonwn Wolfeboro

Please spread the word, ALL the storm drains in downtown Wolfeboro drain to the lake. The catch basins within catch ONLY things that sink. After a heavy rain the floatables will be purged into the Bay. Wolfeboro Bay. They are not sewage, sewage has covers. Their intent is storm water run off. The abundance of cigarette butts and other trash downtown is quite disturbing. Spread the word ! Storm Drains are not trash receptacles. Clean Up Wolfeboro !

Default Not just stuff thrown in a storm drain

It's not just items (trash) being thrown into the drains, it's just plain littering. People throw stuff on the ground, and when it rains, it washes down the street gutters to the drains.

Being in a tourist area just adds to the problem; tourist slobs joining in with the local slobs. .

This is correct as was learned at a Watershed meeting. Also another illustration of how phosphorus enters the lake.

The lakes in Wolfeboro are a treasure, please respect them and keep them clean. What could be simpler than throwing trash in a trash can??

Well, for the simple minded, it is far simpler to throw it on the ground.

Default Storm drains and sewage

As you may or may not know, there is a big push among municipals to separate storm drains and sewage pipes. In the past municipals would allow a storm drain to connect to sewage and vice versa. The goal is to clean up storm spillage into our lakes and rivers by eliminating sewage and to reduce storm run off into the sewage treatment plants. Evidence can be found in almost every municipals in US.

It's about time!

Welcome to the Forum. It's not just Wolfeboro, but you make a good point. Fortunately there are far fewer smokers each year and the problem diminishes over time. On the other hand, other debris still flows through the system and posts like yours help build awareness. Thank you.
