Here you go…. Is it ice in yet?

Just before eight this morning… then the power went out.

Yesterday it went from frozen to wide open, then around 4pm things were starting to ice in again. This morning as far as I can see in both direction it’s glazed over. With every daytime temp for the next week at or above freezing it could go either way.

I still see some open water around Round Island and between Welch and Fish Island….

Default Ice

Wow - is that a dock covered/encased in ice from freezing spray?

That must be a lot of weight on the pilings - reminds me of the show deadliest catch where they have to hammer the ice off the ship or it may turtle and capsize.

Or looking more closely - is that some sort of stone/rock breakwater with tie posts attached????

Default Ice

I doubt the ice is going to hold up after today. With temps expected to hover near 50 degrees and wind gusts anticipated to 40 MPH, the thin and fragile ice currently and barely covering most of the lake I think will be gone...Temps next week in the 50's and near 60 on Thursday!

Will definitely be getting the boat ready early this year!!

Relax Dan...my ice out guess is March 2nd, so you have 20 days to prepare!

I’m thinking official ice out will be declared mid March but will be the earliest on record!

Default It has started

The broads just opened up...Here's a pic from my home security camera. This is the "alien hot tub" area between Ellacoya and Welch Island... By tomorrow it will most likely be all open water...

Default She’s Breaking Up Captain!

Here’s a few pics I just took…The hot tub area definitely got bigger over night and there are many other areas as seen in the photos that have opened up as well. These photos are taken from left to right.

Default bob house and skating on Paugus Bay

Now there's a bob house out front of the north end of South Down and people skating around the western shore to the north... Won't find me out there!

Default It's Coming!

With the recent warm weather, rain and now wind, I am seeing a lot of open water happening between Welch, Belknap Point and Ellacoya / Broads. At about 3:30 PM today the wind on Welch really picked up and has held steady around 25 MPH on my weather station. That is really breaking things up fast! A couple more hour of this wind and rain will be devastating to the thin ice out there...

Stay Tuned!

Dan

Yes I noticed! I just came down route 3 along Winnisquam and the ice was pretty much gone…

I don’t think so Steve…Alton Bay will still be locked in for a while as well as Center Harbor.

I’m still thinking “official Ice Out” will probably be Mid March….Umbrella drinks on the island, much earlier!

I have to go to my Mom’s in Brookfield tomorrow so I will take a few Lake pics along the way so you can see where the ice is at.

Right now here in Gilford, the wind is still whipping pretty good at 25 mph. Can’t wait to see what the wind did to the ice when I wake up in the morning!

Sweet! My usual ice out predictor is Wheelwright Pond in Lee ( typically goes out a week before ), and when I went by yesterday I did notice a large area had opened up, but still had a way to go.

Default Pics

Lots of wide open water this morning! From left to right as viewed from Southern shore looking North. First pic shows Welch island, Round island etc….

From my vantage point open water from Ellacoya all the way to Long Island. You can see the ice line in the third pic approximately in the center of the broads just east of lake shore park. Second pic Welch island at 9:00 o’clock, third pic looking at center of broads….

More to come!

Dan

From the Scenic Rest area looking out at mouth of Alton Bay….

As an fyi…Alton Bay is still fully locked in as is Wolfeboro Bay.

That’s all for now!
