certificate of title?

On a used, 1977, small 13' travel & camping trailer that gets towed by a car, should the seller have a certificate of NH title that shows their ownership.

I am a potential buyer.

In order to register it, do I just go to the town clerk with a hand written, bill of sale from the previous non-dealer owner and that's enough....plus the town's payment?

How does insurance coverage apply for what is basically a towed trailer and bob house?



Have any suggestions?

FLL, if it's over 10 years old, which in your case it is, you shouldn't need a title..... One way to find out is, take your bill of sale to the town hall or
call them and ask......

Based on my limited experience, if it has a GVW under 3,000 lbs it doesn't need a title in NH.

We had a trailer that we bought when you didn't get titles. The folks down the Wolfeboro town offices told us to have the police come down to verify the vin number.

That is the new thing now. You have to call the police in your town to come and verify the vin.

As far as insurance is concerned, when it is attached to your vehicle via hitch the liability from your auto policy covers the trailer whether it is moving or not, as long as it is attached. But when it is not then there is no coverage unless you have a stand alone policy or scheduled on your auto policy for that particular trailer for liability and if wanted, physical damage.

As was posted here before,there are no titles on trailers under #3000.I just bought a new utility trailer and the gvw is #2990 for that reason.If it is over 10 years old you only need a bill of sale.

You do need to get the police to verify the vin even with a bill of sale. Even if you register your cars in another state now, they have to have the vin verified. Makes for a lot of extra work for them, I would think.

We bought a small (14'), used 1991 boat and trailer from a private party three years ago. All I had to do to register the trailer was take the bill of sale and the seller's old registration (which he signed over to me, I believe) to the Alton Town Clerk's office. No verification of the trailer's VIN was required.

Look under selling a vehicle more then 15 years old.

Registering this vehicle requires:

1. Title or
2. Bill of sale and Vin verification or
3. Bill of sale and copy of sellers old registration.

And don't be waring a ski mask and hoodie when you go to the town hall, or they may want to verify more than just the serial number!

Vin Verification can also be done by licensed NH Dealers or Inspection Stations as well as the local PD. If you don't want to bother the Police Dept, with paperwork.

DRH. I don't think you had to do that three years ago. I had never heard of it until a couple of years ago, maybe just last year.

I just sold a 1975 camper trailer last year and registerred an old cargo trailer to use that old plate. The cargo trailer hadn't been registerred in at least 10 years and there was no plate or registration so the VIN had to be verfiied by a police officer. I bet he (prudently) ran it through NCIC when he got back to the station the be sure it wasn't "hot."

While I was going through this process I made a copy of my camper paper-work and gave it to the guy who bought that.

So, if you go by the list Lakepilot provided you should be fine.

Yep, kamper, when I talked to my Chief of Police I asked him if that was the reason and it is. There are a lot of "hot" items and they think this will curb it.

I got me an old utility trailer that is the pickup truck bed off of a 1931 Chevrolet pickup. I've had it for about eight years, sitting out in the yard, and have never moved or registered it...just using it for storage.

It has the original license plate holder bracket in the rear-right which includes a small white license plate illumination white lamp and a single red tail light, above, on the same lamp & license plate holder.

Apparently, back in 1931, amber & red side running lights, turn signals, and brake lights were not required....it was just that single red lamp with a license plate light.

Someone may recall it as the "Chez Nous / My Toy" family trash & utility hauler enroute to the Wolfeboro town dump. It was last registered in about 2000., when I bought it in Wolfeboro.

People back in 1931 got along just fine with, you know, hand signals....left....right...whoa....&... 'stay strong w/ President Hoover!'

Am I legally correct to assume that I can run this trailer today without having to add turn signals, brake lights, and amber & red side running lights because it's grandfathered from 1931 as it is still originally equipped?

Don't know the answer to that question, but if you really want to use it and be safe, after you register it, go to Walmart and buy magnetic lights and stick them near the rear of it. They're cheap. I use them sometimes when towing a car behind our RV.

Well, I found out that the answer is No. I had nothing but a bill of sale when I registered a new-to-me 1986 Polaris, and had no issues. Whether this is the correct answer I may never know, but it is how it was handled for me.
